No, No Nut Butter

Mmm. Oatmeal:

IMG_6227

I went a little TOPPINGS CRAZY this morning.

IMG_6228

My oatmeal contained:

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup rice milk
  • 1 sliced banana
  • Toppings: flax, unsweetened coconut, brown sugar, almonds

Someone asked me the other day why I don’t put nut butters (like peanut butter) in my oatmeal.  The answer is… I hate warm nut butter!  Eww!  I think it’s too sticky. I like nut butters on bread or within Resee’s PB cups, but that’s about it.  I absolutely hate peanut butter cookies.

Random.  🙂

OH geez – I LOVE peanut butter cookies, they are my favorite! But I really don’t like nut butters in oatmeal, I feel like you can’t event taste them!

  • Megan @ Megzz Wins At Life January 27, 2010, 8:50 am

    Have a nice swim lesson!!!

  • ashleigh January 27, 2010, 9:05 am

I’m pretty sure nut butters are the only reason I eat oatmeal 🙂 Have a good workout!

  • Anne Marie@New Weigh of Life January 27, 2010, 9:10 am

  • Estela @ Weekly Bite January 27, 2010, 9:11 am

I’m obsessed with warm nut butters! Deeeelicious!

    Have a great swim 🙂

  • Sarah @ See Sarah Eat January 27, 2010, 9:12 am

I’m the exact opposite, ha ha. That’s why I toast the bread, so it will be warm and melt the nut butter. It’s fun how we all have our preferences 😉

  • Danielle (Coffee Run) January 27, 2010, 9:14 am

Wow, I think you’re the only person I’ve heard say they don’t like warm nut butter…weirdddddd 😉
    That’s a cute O.B. note!

  • *Andrea* January 27, 2010, 9:15 am

  • megan January 27, 2010, 9:16 am

I don’t really like pb on oatmeal either, but I do love it warm. my favorite is when we go camping. We make mountain pies with peanut butter, marshmallows and chocolate. it’s amazing!!

  • Darci January 27, 2010, 9:17 am

interesting that you aren’t a big nut butter fan!!

and i love the operation beautiful note…cute!! 🙂

  • Jessica January 27, 2010, 9:17 am

  • Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) January 27, 2010, 9:19 am

HHHMMMM I love warm nut butters! They seem less sticky to me when they are warm and they go a lot further! Your oat toppings look delicious!

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg January 27, 2010, 9:22 am

You hate warm nut butter?!? WHO ARE YOU??? 🙂

    Have a great day…weirdo 🙂

  • Lauren @ Eater not a runner January 27, 2010, 9:24 am

I agree with the “in reese’s pb cups” statement haha

  • Karla January 27, 2010, 9:27 am

I love melted nut butters! So creamy and delicious! On the other hand, I’m not a fan of whole, raw nuts.
    Cute operation beautiful note!

  • Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com January 27, 2010, 9:27 am

wow that looks like an epic oatmeal 😀
I would loovvve to be able to put nut butter on my oatmeal, cos I WANT it to go all melty, but the only stuff I have is like, rock hard 🙁

  • Madeline - Greens and Jeans January 27, 2010, 9:28 am

I love nut butters in pretty much any context, so I have to say, that you are crazy! I usually hold off putting it in my oats because it generally makes my breakfast TOO filling and I can’t finish it!

  • Molly @vegandorm January 27, 2010, 9:30 am

    Nut butter is amaziiiinnng.
I hate peanut butter cookies too, but I love nut butters over dried or fresh fruit, on oatmeal, in sandwiches, and a million other ways!

  • Krista N January 27, 2010, 9:33 am

HI Caitlin! I’m with you, I do not like my nut butters mixed with anything hot or cold, especially smoothies! I also wanted to let you know that Michael Pollan will be on Oprah today. It should be a good show 🙂

    • Caitlin January 27, 2010, 12:00 pm

I am so excited and have the TIVO set! Thanks for telling me!

    • Caitlin January 27, 2010, 12:00 pm

I am so excited and have the TIVO set! Thanks for telling me! yayy!

  • Morgan @ Healthy Happy Place January 27, 2010, 9:39 am

I’m with you on the warm nut butter.. I hate it, too! I also dislike pb cookies. I’m still on the fence about almond butter, too! I guess I’m just not a nutty person 🙂

  • Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) January 27, 2010, 9:40 am

    What a cute note!

I love nut butter on everything but it grosses out my family that I put it on oatmeal. I was devastated this morning to come downstairs, start making a big bowl of oats and discover that SOMEONE had finished off the last PB jar. 🙁

  • Nicole, MS, RD, LD January 27, 2010, 9:44 am

Congrats to the winners, even if I wasn’t one of them 😉

Have a great swim and run!

  • The Hot and Fit January 27, 2010, 9:44 am

I am not a huge fan of nut butters, whether on cold or warm.
    Loved the note 😉

  • Samantha January 27, 2010, 9:52 am

I will only eat almond butter when it is mixed in with my morning oatmeal. I don’t like the flavor of it by itself. Weird!

  • Renee January 27, 2010, 9:55 am

Caitlin: Random question – what brand of oats do you use for your oatmeal? I have been using TJ’S organic flax oatmeal packets and just realized each serving has 11g of sugar! yikes! looking for something less processed but not sure if i am ready for the whole “soaking oats overnight” thing:)

    • Caitlin January 27, 2010, 12:01 pm

I just use regular Quaker Oats (the non-instant kind). It takes about 4 minutes on the stovetop to make.

  • Morgan @ Life After Bagels January 27, 2010, 9:58 am

warm nut butter is the reason I eat oatmeal 🙂

  • Nicole January 27, 2010, 10:04 am

Your oatmeal looks amazing, but I have to agree with Morgan.. warm nut butter is the reason I eat oatmeal!! I couldn’t eat a whole jar of warm nut butter 😀

  • Ellen Collis January 27, 2010, 10:05 am

Your oatmeal looks YUM! I love that dish you put it in…where did you get it? I actually tried the $1 oatmeal at Jamba Juice this am, and I liked it a lot! I got mine with banana and apple crumble. The calorie count isn’t bad (290) because it was thick and filling, but I have a feeling the sugar count is too high. Next time I will skip the apple crumble—just wanted to try it! That’s why I like the oatmeal at Starbucks—the toppings come in separate packages so you can choose how much you want. I usually use half and save the rest for my oatmeal at home.

all of my plates are from Marshall’s. they have such cute stuff!

  • Jenn (www.j3nn.net) January 27, 2010, 10:11 am

Your oats look yummy! I had oats for breakfast yesterday, no nut butter either, peaches! 🙂

    Jenn

  • Julie @SavvyEats January 27, 2010, 10:16 am

    That note is absolutely adorable!

  • Katharine January 27, 2010, 10:20 am

I’m not a big fan of nut butters in my oatmeal, either. (Although I’ve only tried it once.)

  • Jen January 27, 2010, 10:22 am

    Your title today is hilarious!

  • Heather (Heather's Dish) January 27, 2010, 10:45 am

i’ve discovered the only one i like warm is peanut butter…everything else needs to be at room temp! PB stirred into oats makes them super creamy and rich, though, and you only need about 1/2 Tbsp!

  • Ashley @ Good Taste. Healthy Me January 27, 2010, 10:46 am

omg I love peanut butter in my oatmeal! Peanut butter cookies are also my favorite cookies! You’re crazy! 😉

  • Paige (Running Around Normal) January 27, 2010, 11:03 am

I’ve always noticed there’s no nutbutter on your oats. To each her own I guess, but I can’t go with out it!!

  • Gracie @ Girl Meets Health January 27, 2010, 11:06 am

Haha, I never realized that you don’t put nut butters on your oatmeal. But I’ve gotta say, girl you crazy!! Warm, ooey gooey melty nut butter is what gets my up in the morning 😉

  • Meredith January 27, 2010, 11:07 am

I wondered why you never put nut butters on your oatmeal too! I think it is so yummy!

  • Jasmine @ Eat Move Write January 27, 2010, 11:09 am

Wow. Is there oatmeal under all that stuff? he he…

I love nut butter on my oatmeal. It’s like the best thing ever. To eat his/her own, of course.

  • Matt January 27, 2010, 11:09 am

I honestly can’t eat oatmeal without some peanut butter. I don’t know how you do it…

  • Becka January 27, 2010, 11:17 am

That’s funny. I like nut butters in oatmeal but that’s it. I hate it on toast. LOL.

  • Amber K January 27, 2010, 11:43 am

I love peanut butter cookies! But I don’t add nut butters to my oatmeal for the same sticky reason.

  • Ali @ Food, Fitness, Fashion January 27, 2010, 11:48 am

I can see that you think it is sticky, makes sense. I love nut butter hot, cold whatever. Isn’t it funny the things we are picky about regarding food?

  • Julie January 27, 2010, 11:55 am

Guuuurl you crazy. To me nothing beats nice, warm, melty peanut butter. Yum!

  • Joanne January 27, 2010, 12:03 pm

I can’t believe you don’t like warm nut butters. Don’t let this really gross you out, but I like to heat a TBS and then drizzle it over ice cream. That happens only when a special treat is called for. 🙂

  • Hillary @ Nutrition Nut on the Run January 27, 2010, 12:08 pm

I love PB & AB, but NOT in my oats – ewww.

  • Beth @ DiningAndDishing January 27, 2010, 12:09 pm

Oh man, I LOVE warm nut butter! I leave it extra long on top of my oats for extra meltiness! To each their own I guess 🙂

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing January 27, 2010, 12:25 pm

Aww I love that operation beautiful note, too cute!!!
And I just now realized that you don’t use nut butters that often. Your oatmeal still sounds yummy though, even without the nut butters! Toppings are the fun part!

  • Jamie January 27, 2010, 12:26 pm

confession: i’ve actually NEVER tried nut butter on my oats… i guess i feel like it gets lost in the oats? so im with you on this one 😉

  • Jenna January 27, 2010, 12:27 pm

Omg I am sad to hear you don’t like warn nut butter!
But at least you find other toppings to add to your oats that are yummy!!
    Jenna

  • Laura Georgina January 27, 2010, 12:50 pm

I had oatmeal with peanut butter once–and hated it so much it put me off oatmeal for a week (I lurve oatmeal, so that’s saying a lot!)

Oh, and ran across this today and thought of you–triathlon training tips!

    Go rock that run/swim!

  • Lara (Thinspired) January 27, 2010, 1:06 pm

I don’t like nut butter in my oats, either! I thought I was the only one. I think for me it is a texture thing…it just gets all goopy in the oats and it’s gross. I much prefer toppings like yours where I can actually chew them!

  • Ashley January 27, 2010, 1:41 pm

I’m not a huge peanut butter fan, but almond butter in any form for me = love. Esp. melty on a bran muffin like this morning. mmmm….

  • Alison January 27, 2010, 2:29 pm

Ugh, I don’t like nut butter on my oats, either. I like to spread pb on toast and that gets a little warm and melty, but in oats…blech.
    Glad I’m not alone.

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) January 27, 2010, 6:03 pm

I love nut butters on my oats … especially when they get all melty 🙂 I basically love all toppings on my oats, but it is funny because I HATED oatmeal until I started reading your blog and was inspired by your toppings. Now I LOVE it.

  • Ruth January 28, 2010, 10:47 am

That’s an awesome bowl you have there! I wish I could put nut butter on my oats, but I can’t keep it in the house. I tend to eat it out of the jar with a spoon!
