Bring on the Voodoo Magic

Good morning, world!  The Earth says HELLO!

IMG_6281

Love Florida sunrises.  🙂

I am on a serious oatmeal kick.  Today’s mix:  Pumpkin Oatmeal:

IMG_6289

Us Southerners get screwed when it comes to canned pumpkin, by the way.  I hear its available year-around in the North, but it’s only available in the grocery store from October – December.  I picked up 8 cans last month, including two cans of organic pumpkin:

IMG_6286

But I was kind of disappointed by the organic pumpkin.  It just didn’t taste the same as Libby’s brand.

IMG_6291

My oatmeal contained:

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 sliced banana
  • Toppings: nutmeg, cinnamon, flax, and brown sugar

Regardless of the pumpkin, there’s no such thing as a bad bowl of oatmeal.  :)  Even mediocre oatmeal is still pretty good!

Excuse Me While I Wax Philosophical

Last night, something really weird happened to  me.  When returning from my run, I was suddenly struck by a thought of a particular person in my life.  And for some reason, I was having HORRIBLE thoughts about this person.  I kept thinking they had been murdered!  And I shook my head, told myself I was being ridiculous, and that they were fine.

Low and behold, I come home, look at my cell phone, and I have a voicemail from that particular person!  Without going into details, something really bad had happened to the person.  Weird, huh?

I know people who have woken up, said “This is going to be a bad day,” and then someone they love dies without warning.  Now, that’s freaky.

Thoughts:

  • If you can “sense” that something bad has happened to someone you love, does that mean that we’re emotionally/spiritually connected to that person and can “feel” their emotions, even when they are 1,000’s of miles away?

  • If you can PREDICT that something bad is GOING to happen when the events of the incident have not been set in motion (i.e. you know it’s going to be a bad day, but your loved one hasn’t died in a car crash yet or even gotten into the car),  what does that mean?  Does it mean that time is not linear?  That time folds back onto itself?  That time is liquid?

  • What is the implication that we cannot “sense” bad things happening to strangers, even when that suffering is very great?  Like, I didn’t feel like something terrible had happened during the Haiti earthquake.  Does this mean we can only sense people we are close to? Why is that?

OK, that was a little out there for Healthy Tipping Point, but seriously, these are the kind of things that keep me up at night.  Have you ever had a moment of ESP like mine?

I knew days before, that my grandparents were going to pass away. weird as it might sound, it came to me in my dreams. it was like them coming to me to say goodbye in their own way. All were very sick/almost incoherent at the time too…

    • Trice January 29, 2010, 9:37 am

Weird…that same thing happened to me with both my grandparents. They were both very sick & incoherent, but they came to me in my dreams days before they died & both of them were healthy looking…very strange. My grandma came to me in a dream after she died asking me to make my Aunt stop smoking because she was sick…I didn’t give it much thought until about a year later when she was diagnosed with cancer at 45 years old.

    • Jessica @ Fit Chick Wannabe January 29, 2010, 9:55 am

When my grandfather passed away, I had a dream shortly after where I went to go visit him in the hospital (but the hospital was in the middle of a beautiful field) and he was just sitting up talking to me all healthy and strong like I had always known him before that. I took his death really hard and I feel that was his way of telling me that he’s ok now.

      • Melissa S. January 29, 2010, 10:13 am

All my grandparents came to me in my dreams after they passed away too. they all just kept telling me to tell my parents and family that evrything would be ok. my grandma even ended up telling me where she had hidden
things (LIKE $$$) in holes in closets and stuff! it was crazy scary but cool at the same time! We actually had me try using a ouiji board to communicate, but it didnt work…only in my dreams!

        • Jessica @ Fit Chick Wannabe January 29, 2010, 10:27 am

Thats awesome! I haven’t had anything like that. But my fiance and I are over my grandmother’s house all the time helping her with stuff and my grandfather has definitely helped us find tools in his workshop a bunch of times. It is kinda creepy, but really cool.

    • Kristin January 29, 2010, 1:39 pm

I knew that my grandmother was going to die the night that she did, I just knew it. She had been on hospice and the nurses were expecting her to last about another week but that evening, I knew that when I went into her room to say goodnight, it would be the last time I spoke to her. When I went into her room, she was already gone. I also knew immediately that she was dead when I walked in the room. I know that sounds stupid, how can you not know if someone is dead or alive? But she’d been sleeping most the time and you couldn’t really tell, I just knew.

I also get weird deja vu in my dreams, I’ll dream something, like for example, about 6 months ago, I had a dream that my parents were sitting around laughing and talking (mind you, my parents were separated and not speaking at the time of the dream) and last night, (they’re back together now) they had the EXACT conversation that they had had in my dream, weird stuff.

  • Jenna January 29, 2010, 8:07 am

Too funny on buying 8 cans of pumpkin!
Yeah that is weird about ESP!

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing January 29, 2010, 8:07 am

Great looking oats! I live in S.C. and we have Libby’s pumpkin available all year long. Maybe it’s a FL thing? And I do not like the organic at all (first time i’ve ever said that).. It is extremely runny and to me at first it tastes great but then it leaves this yucky aftertaste… i’ll stick to Libby’s when I can 🙂

And oh wow, that is crazy about what happened to you!! I think that we DO sense things about people close to us. Two of my best friends are twins and it’s freaky how much they are connected. But I really do think it’s true. I’ve never woken up thinking that it’s going to be a bad day and someone else died but it was just a bad day. I HAVE had feelings that a specific thing was going to happen between me and someone close to me and it did, and that has happened several times. Sometimes you just know.. there’s no explaining it.

  • Megan @ Megzz Wins At Life January 29, 2010, 8:08 am

ahhh I do that all the time!! I always think of something and then it happens!!!! Lately it is has been less and less but a few years ago it was constantly!!

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:09 am

Do you think that’s because you were more “in tune” a few years ago? Are you busier now? Sometimes I feel like I miss messages from the universe because I’m too stressed out/not paying attention.

      • Megan @ Megzz Wins At Life January 29, 2010, 8:11 am

Yes defiantly!! Now I work full time in corporate america and I hardly have time to relax and think.. A few years ago I was in college and much more relaxed!!

      • Red Head, Yellow Dog January 29, 2010, 8:51 pm

my boyfriend has a “sense” for spirits, messages from the universe etc. It used to be more pronounced when he was younger. i think because your mind is less consumed with what the world tells you etc.

one thing that happened recently was that he had a dream that his car was going really fast and he couldn’t stop it. A few days later his car was on cruise control and it just kept excellerating and wouldn’t stop. It was terrifying! luckily he was able to stop it. but it was really weird since he had told me about that dream and how much it freaked him out. crazy stuff

  • Nicole of Raspberry Stethoscope January 29, 2010, 8:09 am

Sometimes I will get intense feelings like something bad has happened to my boyfriend, but then I call and he’s ok. I think it is more paranoia though because he drives from St. Pete to USF everyday on I-275 and his horn is broken, so I’m always scared! haha, but actually, sometimes I can sense when something is going to go wrong with my patients at work. For instance, yesterday the day started calm, but I even said to myself before any sign had happened, “I have a feeling something is going to happen to him. I hope we don’t end up intubating..” and 4 hours later, we were intubating him. I guess that isn’t exactly the same, but…

  • jenna @ Eating Green, Staying Lean January 29, 2010, 8:09 am

Actualllyy, it’s ironic that this was your topic today. At work a few days ago I was taking a to go order (work @ a restaurant post-graduating early haha) and the name Jared popped into my head randomly…then (no joke) I asked for a name and it was actually Jared. Definitely freaky, and made me double guess him a time or two.

Also, the oatmeal looks awesome! Just tried pumpkin yogurt yesterday…yum!

    :), Jenna

  • Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) January 29, 2010, 8:11 am

    Oh, that’s so bizarre!

I’ve had a moment of feeling like something happened but it didn’t (thank goodness!)

  • alyssa January 29, 2010, 8:13 am

My best friend always gets premonitions. She goes to Virginia Tech and the morning of the horrific shooting she had a feeling that something bad was supposed to happen so she skipped class for the first time. Her class was in the building where the shootings took place. It’s so scary and so unexplainable!

  • alyssa January 29, 2010, 8:13 am

omg. that’s horrible! i am sooo glad your friend skipped class.

  • The Hot and Fit January 29, 2010, 8:13 am

I have had this before, but more typically, I can sometimes just know a certain thing is going to happen. That sounds ridiculous, but I think its more of a common sense issue. Like for example, if you are very notified about a certain situation and are fully aware of the details…you can have a feeling regarding how its going to develop.
I am sounding too weird, aren’t I? Never mind, it might just come to a gut feeling after all.

  • emily January 29, 2010, 8:14 am

I’ve had experiences like that a couple of times. One night my boyfriend (now husband) and I were out with a huge group of friends when we decided to head home early. We gave a cursory wave to the group but for some reason I felt like I HAD to go give Morgan a hug goodbye, even though we usually didn’t do that. Morgan overdosed and died a few hours later. I’ve always been really glad I gave him that hug.

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:16 am

that is a heart wrenching, but lovely, story. i’m really sorry about your friend but it must be good to know you got in one more hug. 🙁

  • Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) January 29, 2010, 8:15 am

I hate that feeling. I’ve never had it happen as intensely as you describe but when my grandmother died last year, I knew as soon as my mom called what had happened. Yes, she was sick and in the hospital, but just picking up the phone, I knew, without hearing a word.

  • linds January 29, 2010, 8:16 am

Funny you say that about the organic pumpkin, I too think it sucks compared to Libbys ! And regarding the EP, I have a twin sister and one day I was headed out to a doctors appt, and I need to bike there while it was a rain storm, well I ended up having a horrible accident and almost died on the road and ended up in the hospital for 3 days. later my sister told me that day as she watched me leave she got a feeling that i was not coming home that night !

  • jewels January 29, 2010, 8:17 am

I had a weird feeling of being the day my brother died without warning.

When you mentioned haiti it reminded me of a friend who told us the night before 9/11 (i live in ny) that he felt something disasterous was about to happen

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg January 29, 2010, 8:18 am

That is so strange– and yet, I know exactly what you mean. I totally believe that some people are attuned to a “sixth sense” of sorts.

So sorry to hear that something bad happened to your friend 🙁

Oh, and I agree with you– organic pumpkin is NOT Libby’s.

  • jewels January 29, 2010, 8:19 am

I meant weird feeling of being very “off”

  • Jennie {in Wonderland} January 29, 2010, 8:21 am

I think I used to be more ‘in tune’ with the universe when I was younger. I had a dream that a plane would crash into New York harbour two days before TWA 800 did. I remember being really freaked out by that – and my flying fears started.

I’m paranoid in general so I always have a feeling that something will go wrong. I think that’s because I’m so far away from my family [they are in Canada and I’m in the UK], plus my brother is in Afghanistan so every time I turn on the news my heart stops. It’s that feeling of *not knowing* that gets me.

BTW: I always find that different kinds of canned pumpkin have all sorts of tastes. Sometimes they are mixed with squash too and that changes it.

  • Allison January 29, 2010, 8:21 am

On day at work I got the terrible sense that I just had to get home. It was overwhelming, so I left work early, which I had literally never done before, and when I got home, my cat was really sick. He died a few days later.

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:23 am

I am sorry about your cat ;(

Question: Do you think this means that animals have souls like humans do? Because how else could we sense their pain and suffering?

      • Julie January 29, 2010, 10:39 am

I definitely think they do! Whenever my brother or I was sick growing up, our cat Woody (I was 3 when we got him, so don’t blame the name on me 😉 ) would always stay close to you, as if to comfort you…it was weird. It was like he knew we weren’t feeling well. And this is reallllly crazy and I may seem a little, um, off, but one time when I was little, my cat was lying on top of me and I was trying to sleep. I didn’t want to disturb him, so I just thought over and over in my mind, “I wish you would just move a teeny bit” and he literally got up, moved about 3 inches and sat back down for the night. SO weird!!

  • Lee January 29, 2010, 8:27 am

Pumpkin is available year round in Georgia.

Usually when I get that feeling, it’s completely unfounded. I don’t know what that says about my ability to be in tune with things.

  • meg c. January 29, 2010, 8:28 am

interesting thoughts about the “esp” thing. It makes me think occurances aren’t just random and can somehow be sensed.

in your case, it seems like you “knew” something had happened to that person right when it actually did, not before. so maybe that has more to do with a “sensing current feelings” than predicting anything.

when i was in high school i came home late on a friday night and felt like something bad was going to happen, but everything was normal and i went to bed. when i woke up the next morning there was an ambulance at my house because my mom had somehow thrown her back out in her sleep and couldn’t get out of bed.

a friend of mine in high school had a dream about planes crashing into buildings right before 9/11. eerie.

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:31 am

You know what I was just thinking? Sometimes I think something really bad has happened to someone I love, and they are fine. But maybe they were really angry or hurt or upset at that moment (about something silly, like a bill) and their negative energy was transferring to me and I misread it. Hmm.

      • Nicole of Raspberry Stethoscope January 29, 2010, 8:37 am

That’s what I think, too! like in my previous comment, I will get a bad feeling something has happened to someone, like my boyfriend, but he’s fine, but then i’ll learn he is not in a good mood or had a terrible day. So maybe we’re just feeling those emotions as they occur, too.

      • Shannon January 29, 2010, 10:50 am

I get those too – sometimes I’m so convinced that something terrible happened to my parents that I almost expect the phone to ring. I always thought I was just paranoid about their poor health (they are obese and sedentary, and eat poorly), but maybe I’m picking up on a bad mood or experience of theirs.

  • RhodeyGirl January 29, 2010, 8:28 am

Before any of my relatives passed away I had a dream that they had passed. Within 2 or 3 days. My grandfather lived in Jordan, and last year I had a dream that he came to me to tell me something important about life. Two days later he passed away.

  • Paige January 29, 2010, 8:29 am

When I was in high school, I dreamed that my friend’s parents were in a terrible car crash. I even dreamed about being at the funeral. I woke up crying, and told my Mom and Dad what I had dreamed. I wanted to call my friend and tell her to warn her parents…that’s how strongly I felt about it. My parents wouldn’t let me tell my friend about the dream. They kept telling me that it was “just” a dream, and that I should just let it go. Later on that day, I heard my Mom on the phone. She looked really somber. When she hung up, she looked at me in disbelief, and told me that my friend’s parents had been in a serious car wreck. They were in the hospital for a few days, but came out of it alright. I still get chills thinking about it!

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:30 am

      AHHHH! that’s scary.

  • Alisha January 29, 2010, 8:31 am

I think it all has to do with energy. We all create energy, we absorb energy, and if you are connected with someone by blood or friendship, you kind of become one in terms of common energy. For example, the conservation of energy: energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be transformed from one state to another, haha, if that makes any sense. That’s why I don’t really believe in shows like paranormal activity because all the crap they say they are picking up on, its all just energy, not an actual ghost.
I’ve often joke with my friends that I am a “freaking prophet” because I’m very good at sensing situations, predicting things for them, and intuitively knowing when something is wrong.
I am a huge believer in this idea of energy, especially Karma.

    • Julie January 29, 2010, 11:56 am

Well, we are energy so I totally believe that the energy that we feel from a “ghost” being present really is a lost soul of sorts.

  • Estela @ Weekly Bite January 29, 2010, 8:31 am

I really hope your friend is okay!

I’ve never had a feeling that serious, but I can sense when something is leading up to a bad thing.

  • Vee January 29, 2010, 8:32 am

Definitely some interesting questions. I hope that particular person will be better soon, sending some luck your way.
I’m weird; I wake up and know stuff. I knew when my grandparents died, when friends of friends were no longer amongst us. I also happen to see poltergeists and have been hearing and seeing ghosts on a regular basis. My great-grandfather keeps on visiting me whenever I stay overnight in his house and plays violin – freaky, huh? 🙂
I believe that time is liquid, it’s just another dimension. Who can say what is right and wrong? What if the mentally ill people can actually see something we can’t. What if there are parallel universes and timelines? So many possibilities and options. I love this topic, I’m almost spilling my lunch and I’m so excited I can talk about it. 🙂

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:34 am

My husband has a really intense book on physics that explains how time is not linear, and just reading a few paragraphs of it BLOWS MY MIND. the world is soooo much more complicated than our tiny human brains can imagine!

      • Vee January 29, 2010, 8:38 am

Oh, I know what you are talking about. I studied some of that at Uni. 🙂 Déjà vu would also belong to this category I think. Why do we get that feeling? I can go somewhere I almost immediately I know I have been there before and know where to turn and go even though it is my first time at that particular place.

        • Jennifer January 29, 2010, 10:05 am

The reason you have a feeling of deja vu is because you HAVE been there before. If not in this life, then in a previous life. It happens to people all the time. They can go to a foreign country and just drive intuitively and end up in a place that is familiar to them (unexplainably) and later figure out that is where they lived in the past life (this us usually figured out during past-llife regressionshypnosis). I know there are a lot of people rolling their eyes at me right now because there are more skeptics than believers, but once you have experienced it, it is hard to ignore and disbelieve.
I think I am one of those people who are hypersensitive to things of this nature. For example, I can see spirits….not often but defintiely ocassionaly. I have one that lives in my house, and when I told my husband about it laughed and joked about it until one morning he got up very early and on his way to the kitchen he saw it for himself. Now, he is a believer, too. And, I hear them upstairs all the time and especially walking on the stairs. My office is right next to the staircase. One night I was in here working and I heard footsteps on the stairs and thought it was one of my children coming down, but when I turned to see who it was there was nobody there. It used to really FREAK me out, but I am used to it now! 🙂

        • caitlin January 29, 2010, 10:06 am

Jennifer – That’s exactly what the Husband believes (about prior lives)!

        • Julie January 29, 2010, 11:59 am

I believe deja vu is the universes way of telling us we are on the right path. Like our lives are planned out for us (kind of like a bluw print, nothing is set in stone) and when you experience deja vu it’s like the universes way of saying we’re in the right place.

  • megan January 29, 2010, 8:34 am

this is an interesting topic. I don’t really believe in being “in tune” with the universe. I’m a Christian so I come at it from a different perspective. I don’t know how to explain the stuff a lot of the commentors have mentioned. although there is another “dimension” (for lack of a better word…angels and demons, etc) that could play some part. I’ve never actually experienced this sort of thing, but if I did I would attribute it to God prompting my spirit. I do tend to be overly anxious and picture a lot of bad things happening…thankfully nothing has come true yet.

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:36 am

I’m not particularly religious, but I LOOOOOVE the idea of God prompting your spirit. How wonderful is that? That is such a lovely thought. I love to know we’re not alone in the universe.

      • megan January 29, 2010, 8:38 am

Your response made me smile. I love the idea of God prompting my spirit as well 🙂

        • Niki@ Niki's Neverending Adventure January 29, 2010, 9:46 am

I totally agree with you Megan. I am a Christian also so I think if we “sense” something, then it’s God’s way of helping use know or deal with a situation. More of like letting us know HE is there!

    • Mary @ Fit this girl January 29, 2010, 10:58 am

Yes! I just wrote my big post below about being spiritual beings and how God speaks to us today through our spirits (and dreams too). Being clear on what is God’s prompting and my own fear or worry is a big one. Like the stories we hear of people hearing God tell them to call in sick on 9/11 or one woman who was in the building and God told her to turn around and go home. I would think, is that me being just tired or not wanting to work, or really God? But just like any relationship when we know him so well, we will recognize his voice. What a great post today..!

    • Emily January 29, 2010, 11:09 am

definitely agree! I was recently in a car accident, and the entire time I was driving up to the accident, different reasons why I shouldn’t be driving popped into my head. I was thinking things like, “Oh, I wish I had my fiance drive,” or “wow it’s so dark outside tonight…it’s kind of hard to see.” I think God was trying to warn me. Also, my grandma repeatedly tells the story of getting a strong feeling that she and my grandpa had to get up right away to go to my dad’s pick-up soccer game in college (they never usually went). They got there just in time to see my dad get kneed in the head and knocked out cold. And again, we say it was one of God’s warnings, trying to help us out. 🙂

    • Alison January 30, 2010, 12:04 am

I’m a Christian and thought I would chime in here too. The only time I recall a “premonition” was when I was in high school and leaving campus with friends for lunch. It was the ONLY day in my life that I didn’t wear a seatbelt and not wearing it SAVED my life. I was sitting behind the driver. The driver of the car I was in ran a red light. As the other car was about to hit us, I was able to throw myself across the backseat. The other car smashed into the backseat, right where I was sitting. I walked away without any major injuries. Thank God for that one!

  • Jacquie January 29, 2010, 8:34 am

I’ve definitely had a moment like yours. I don’t know why, but I feel when you’re close enough to someone, you just get senses and can tell when something’s off. Deeper, while it’s happened, I can’t say why, but it’s just meant for you to know.

    I hope they’re ok! 🙂

  • Katie@ Two Lives, One Lifestyle January 29, 2010, 8:38 am

Strange feelings and coincidences happen all the time to me.. and even more to my mom. I can’t think of any specific/detailed thoughts I’ve had, just generally the person popping into my mind all day and then later finding out something happened to them. One thing I do a lot: pick up the phone to call someone and before I get a chance to dial, they call.

The night my grandma died at 84, she told my grandpa she didn’t want to go to bed and they stayed up until 4 AM talking and reminiscing about their lives. They dozed off for a few hours and she was no longer with us by the next morning. They were two most in love people I have ever known and I think, deeply connected. I think they both “knew” that night was their last together on earth.

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:40 am

this literally brought tears to my tears!!! i love love. i’m sorry about your grandma.

  • Karla January 29, 2010, 8:41 am

I definitely know that feeling. I remember one morning I had a terrible feeling in my stomach and a few hours later my mom called with some terrible news. It’s crazy how things like that happen!

  • Justy2003 January 29, 2010, 8:42 am

I had a really weird dream that my fiance just up and left me for no particular reason…he just wasn’t sure he could do it anymore. I told him about it and we talked about it and he admitted having some second thoughts but we talked and things were fine…thought it was just cold feet. 3 days later he decided he really couldn’t do it and broke it off. Boys suck.

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:44 am

boys do suck. a lot!!! e-mail me if you ever need a third party to chat with.

Oh, also a few days later when I could finally call my friend to tell her, she said she had a really strong urge to call me the day it happened and she didn’t know why so she just ignored it. And she’s like 2000 miles away. 6th sense? I think there must be one!

    • Shelly January 29, 2010, 3:04 pm

Your comment just made me think about what happened with my ex-husband. We broke up b/c he was cheating on me pretty indiscriminately and it came to light in a really horrible way- sufficed to say he turned out to be a terrible person. However, looking back on the entire duration of when he was being horrible- really bad stuff kept happening to him. In a period of about a year, his truck was broken into, he fell down the stairs at our apartment complex and got all sorts of injured, he got shingles, came down with a really odd and painful ear fungus twice, and was bitten by a spider while he was sleeping. Coincidence? Let’s just say that it really made me believe in Karma.

      • Kristin January 29, 2010, 9:35 pm

The shingles and the ear fungus made me LOL. That’s definitely karma! And well-deserved, from the sounds of it.

  • Karissa @ CardioFoodie January 29, 2010, 8:43 am

(I also stocked up on pumpkin-it takes up a good chunk of shelf space in my pantry). I believe we all have intuition, it is part of being human. I also think that some people are tuned in better or listen more carefully to their intuition. I hope that your friend is okay!

  • Tamara January 29, 2010, 8:44 am

I’m going to be the unpopular one here: the apparent phenomenon of thinking we can sense/predict things comes from our ability to overemphasize the times we’re /right/ and filter out the times we were /wrong/. Everyone remembers the girl who said she dreamed of a plane crash before 911, or thought of a relative right before they received the phone call that they had died. But people dream of plane crashes nightly–they just forget when they wake up. I mean really; would the girl have bothered to tell everyone, “I dreamed of a plane crash last night, and then the next day absolutely nothing happened! It was so weird!”

A coincidental event turns a random thought into a “premonition,” but I’m pretty sure I can’t control the radio station, even though I was humming a song to myself /right/ before aired.

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:46 am

true true! good point. we tend to remember only the times our senses were “right” and not the 100000’s of times it was wrong.

    • megan January 29, 2010, 9:23 am

      Great point!

    • Julie January 29, 2010, 12:02 pm

Good point, however I don’t believe in coincidences. I believe everything, be it good or bad or however random it may seems, happens for a reason. I’m like hijacking everyone’s comments, sorry! I’m just wicked into this stuff.

  • Sarah @ See Sarah Eat January 29, 2010, 8:45 am

Like Megan, I am a Christian, and I believe that God has a plan and purpose for this life.

But I do believe we have a real connection to certain things in the world or to certain people. I have had bad feelings before and not really known what they were about, only to find out later someone I know had something bad happen to them.

I had a weird experience on 9/11/01…I was in college and normally in class during the time the planes crashed into the WTC. But we had switched classrooms for some reason and as we were leaving, my coffee got knocked onto me (onto my new New York City shirt!) so I went all the way home to change clothes, turning on the tv to see the second plane hit. It’s like I was meant to see it happen for some reason.

But I also have dreams about people whom I haven’t seen in a while, like years, and then later on I will see them. I’ve also had a dream about someone and then had them tell me they dreamt the same thing. Very interesting stuff!

I hope your friend is alright.

  • Morgan @ Healthy Happy Place January 29, 2010, 8:47 am

I have had this happen before! When I was really young (maybe 9) I was out with my parents shopping and I had this horrible feeling that my gerbil was dead. When we came home, sure enough, he was dead. very odd.

  • Ginger January 29, 2010, 8:48 am

    Caitlin,
I often have things like this happen to me since I was a teenager there has been thoughts where I randomly think of a past moment good/bad where I would be with this person… later to know that something has happened. I can often sense if I’m going to see random people that I normally don’t see. I have also had a few dreams that link up with real situations. Very odd

  • Erin January 29, 2010, 8:53 am

Yep – it happens all the time.

The most recent was in August last year, when I thought of my godfather randomly (he was very special to me, but not someone I thought of every day by any means!), of the conversation we’d last had months earlier. The next day, my mum called me to tell me he’d been hit by a truck, and he later passed away. Earlier that day, when my dad had received the call from my godfather’s brother telling him of the accident, he had at that very moment been mowing the lawn in preparation for my godfather (his best friend) visiting the following weekend. My dad thought to himself, “Rod and I can play cricket on this lawn next weekend”. Then the phone rang.

In a separate event earlier that year, I received a phone call from my Dad, asking me to come over. I knew instantly that my parents were going to tell me that my mum had lung cancer. She did – my mum is not a smoker, and although she’d had a cough for a long time, she was not unwell. Thankfully, she is 100% healthy now.

  • Sammie January 29, 2010, 8:55 am

Libby’s has been missing from my grocer store shelves lately so when I spotted some at Target yesterday I bought 4 cans. I’ve tried other brands – even the one in your photo – they do not compare. Libby’s rules even if it isn’t organic.
My sister has premonitions ALL the time and all of them have actually come true. I believe in having a “gift” for those sort of things. Sorry about your friend. I hope everything is okay.

  • Katy ( The Balanced Foodie ) January 29, 2010, 8:56 am

I can only remember one instance of that happening. But it was someone related to someone I was close to. I had this awful, anxious feeling and shared it with a friend of mine that I felt something bad was going to happen. Found out that my friends sister, her fiancee had died that day.

  • meghann January 29, 2010, 8:56 am

You can buy pumpkin year around at Whole Foods. I’ve also found it at larger Publixes during the summer, but with th epumpkin shortage it would probably be harder to find it this year.

  • Amber January 29, 2010, 8:56 am

Actually, you’re wrong. I’m up north and we’ve been out of pumpkin since November due to the shortage. It also isn’t carried year round like you said.

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:58 am

sorry – thats just what i was told.

We have Libby’s in NY and PA all year! My mom actually makes pumpkin pie year-round 🙂

    • Caitlin in MD January 29, 2010, 3:04 pm

We’ve got it year round in Maryland. In every grocery store I’ve ever been to. For all 29 years of my life. Also, I was told about the shortage right before Halloween and then never saw any lack of pumpkin on the shelves.

I’ve had really bad feelings about things before but have been very fortunate that only a few have actually happened. Usually, I’ll suddenly get the impulse to reach out to someone. In high school, I wrote a long letter to my great grandfather in class one day b/c I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I totally forgot to send the letter and a week later he passed away. It makes me so sad to think he didn’t know what I had written to him, but I hope he could feel that I loved him.

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 8:59 am

i bet your positive energy transferred to him and he felt your love 🙂

  • Mara @ What's For Dinner? January 29, 2010, 8:58 am

I have things happen like that to me all the time… I’ll end up calling a friend I’d been thinking about and it turns out she really needed to talk. Sometimes though, my anxiety disorder takes over, and i think bad things are going to happen to everyone, and that our dog is going to die RIGHT that minute. That’s irrational…

  • Nicole, RD January 29, 2010, 9:02 am

I have had a few moments like that but more something like I knew someone needed a hug, or a call, or to hear something very specific in the way of advice. Crazy!

  • Anne Marie@New Weigh of Life January 29, 2010, 9:02 am

Wow-that’s so weird! I usually have bad feelings about things that turn out to be fine, so I have the opposite of what you have, I think.

  • Paige (Running Around Normal) January 29, 2010, 9:03 am

OK, the pumpkin in the north thing is totally wrong – this year. Libby’s Farm is literally 20 minutes from my house, and I can’t find canned pumpkin ANYWHERE. The farmers had a really bad pumpkin season 🙁 🙁 It sucks!

Gosh it’s so hard to wrap my brain around those concepts about time, but it’s SO interesting to think about. It’s almost like we, as humans, aren’t meant to be able to grasp the entire time concept..
I hope your friend turns out ok though 🙁 That’s really scary.

  • Jessica @ How Sweet January 29, 2010, 9:03 am

OK that story totally freaked me out!! I hope this person is ok.

  • Jessica January 29, 2010, 9:04 am

I have done this before…but its weird that you said that today, because this morning all the way to work I thought….I am going to get injured today, I am going to be in the hosptial because I am going to get in an accident.
It was the strangest feeling in the world and made me jumpy all the way to work….I could even picture myself in the hospital…hm
nothing happened….but i am terrified of driving home….

I am in SC and I can not find pumpkin anywhere…even the organic kind…bummer

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 9:05 am

maybe now that you are worried, you will be a safer driver and be fine 🙂

  • Lu January 29, 2010, 9:10 am

When I was younger things like that would happen to me all the time. As I’ve gotten older they have gone away. My son, who’s 3, has things like this all the time. I’m not sure it if is child innocence or what. My husband had a bad car accident, he totaled the car but was fine. The morning of the accident I woke up abruptly at about the time it happened for no reason, I walked to my son’s room and he was in the hallway crying and hugging my mother, who happened to be over. I asked him what was wrong and then the phone rang. It was my husband telling me about the accident. It was huge. It shut down a highway. My son also senses things are about to happen, he will say things like “Opa is calling” and then, 10 seconds later, the phone will ring and it’s Opa. The other day he turned to me and said, “Daddy’s home” and I said that he was at work, and then, right then (eek), the garage door opened and guess who came home? It’s very strange but funny. Kids are so in tune with the universe.

    • Kristin January 29, 2010, 9:39 pm

That’s really cool. I don’t remember having anything like that happen when I was a kid, but I totally believe it. I think that as adults, with all of the many distractions and responsibilities, it’s easy to let them take over your mind and thoughts and miss “messages” from the universe…or whatever.

  • katie davis January 29, 2010, 9:16 am

I thought this was such an interesting discussion. I am also a Christian and actually have been in a Bible Study since January that is all about God’s will and being called. I think I have become much more aware of how God can move us in a variety of ways and give us insight as well. But I agree with you, if is often so powerful and so out there that it is too much for us to understand!

  • eliza January 29, 2010, 9:17 am

Pumpkin is only available in Maine for about a month or two 🙁

  • Erica January 29, 2010, 9:19 am

I made your pumpkin spice latte oatmeal this morning and it was amazing, topped with almonds and brown sugar.
I live in Michigan and the pumpkin supplies are getting low. Every time I see it I buy a can!

Regarding your ESP moment — it happens to me all the time! A few weeks ago I got to the gym a few minutes before my husband, and I had this bad feeling he was in a car accident. He finally got to the gym, but he told me that he had slid into a lamppost in the gym parking lot! Weird!

  • Courtney January 29, 2010, 9:20 am

I think some people are more intuitive and in touch with the “vibes” out in the universe than others. I have had things like this happen to me more times than I can count…and it can be a horrible feeling to just know something is going to happen and not know what or how.
I heard there is actually a pumpkin shortage for 2010 due to the wet farming conditions this past year…that might be why you can’t find pumpkin?

  • Becky January 29, 2010, 9:24 am

I love this post! I have a friend who is an astrophysicist so we often discuss these issues of non-linear time, time-travel, etc. I do believe that we can “know” or “feel” certain things before they happen, but I have no idea why. It happens with good things for me too though- not just bad. One night, I was laying in bed imagining what I would say at my sister and her long-term boyfriend’s wedding (they were not engaged, so I have no idea why I was thinking about this!) and the next day, he proposed to her. So weird!

  • MelissaNibbles January 29, 2010, 9:24 am

I’m a big believer in The Secret (you can hate, but it works) and I truly believe that what thoughts you put into the Universe is what the Universe will create. Human bodies are nothing but atoms, energy, blah, blah, blah and part of the Universe. When you think thoughts like that, the universe makes it happen. Yeah, I’m a freak so what?

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 9:42 am

you can always let your freak flag fly high on HTP. I’m a total believer in all that stuff, too.

      • Tracy January 29, 2010, 10:50 am

I looove the Secret too! It changed my life. I’m actually taking a “religion” class this semester, and one of the required readings is The Secret. My professor also did a legit seance on the first day. So eerie, but AWESOME. But anyways, my fiance’s mom had a crazy intuition when Hurricane Ike hit Houston. Their house is about 45 min north from where it was really bad, but she had a strong feeling a tree would hit her house that night, so they decided to stay somewhere else. No one else in her area evacuated. A HUGE tree actually got uprooted and took out her whole bedroom, where she would have been sleeping at the time. CRAZY. I guess a little of Law of Attraction too. I always tell people if you don’t want something, STOP FOCUSING YOUR ENERGY on it! It has worked wonders in my life. 🙂

        • Kristin January 29, 2010, 9:43 pm

I haven’t read The Secret (it’s on my bookshelf, waiting for me), but I’m definitely a believer in how dwelling on negative feelings will always, always make things worse. 2009 was my worst year ever and I think a lot of it was being unable to wrap my head about anything positive that could have come from all of the bad things that were going on. I just kept thinking that things could get worse…and they did. And then when I did manage to come around and become more positive, the good stuff has been happening non-stop! Very cool.

  • Dori January 29, 2010, 9:25 am

That is so eerie. I had a dream that my grandpa died the night before he died. Not in the same way he died, but still…. It really freaked me out.

  • Julie January 29, 2010, 9:31 am

This post couldn’t have come a better time… One week ago, I was packing my suitcase to go visit my boyfriend in LA (and I live in Tennessee) and I had this overwhelming feeling that we weren’t going to be together any longer and “this moment was it.” The feeling was so strong that I physically shook my body to shake it off. And then, one hour later, he breaks up with me and I don’t go to LA. Very strange how things happen sometimes…

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 9:43 am

WOAH! I hope you cashed in that plane ticket for someplace better 🙂 I would’ve gone on a tropical vacation.

  • caronae January 29, 2010, 9:38 am

Very interesting musings. Perhaps time can fold back in on itself! I don’t know. I had extreme pupmkin overnight oats this morning! Stoneyfield pumpkin yogurt, canned pumpkin, pumpkin butter, and of course, oats. 🙂

  • Scorpio Woman January 29, 2010, 9:38 am

One night I dreamt that my grandfather was in the hospital (and I knew he was really there) and was crying because he didn’t want to die. The next day, my mother called me to tell me he was dead. Maybe I felt it. I don’t know.

  • Sarah January 29, 2010, 9:42 am

I had an experience like that. I was at work and suddenly thought of my beloved cat, Charley. I couldn’t shake the weird feeling and was anxious to get done with my shift so I could check on her. When I got home, my sister had left me a note saying that Charley must have gotten out of the house and she was no where to be found. Unfortunately, I never did find my cat. 🙁

About the pumpkin…I know that when you stocked up on pumpkin I thought about how happy I am that my local grocery store carries Libby’s year-round. Last weekend I realized that they only carry the normal sized cans of the store brand pumpkin…which I don’t like. Luckily they still carry the huge cans of Libby’s so I grabbed one of those. Reading all of the comments reminded me of the pumpkin shortage rumors I heard about last fall. I wonder if the change at my local store is because of that. Maybe I need to stock up on the big cans of Libby’s!!

  • Meg January 29, 2010, 9:42 am

What a great topic! I think about this all the time, and I’m glad I’m not the only one. I agree with previous posters that some people are very sensitive to their surroundings and have the ability to sense major changes. I wrestle with whether we CAUSE things to happen with our thoughts (the concept of The Secret), or whether we are able to foresee events because time is not linear as we are taught. It is fun to ponder these ideas, and even though I feel like I go in circles, it is certainly an interesting subject!

  • Heather @ Side of Sneakers January 29, 2010, 9:43 am

There’s something to be said for sensing things like that. Some people call it women’s intuition, some call it a sixth sense–what ever it’s called I’ve definitely heard enough stories to know that it can be very real.

And as far as canned pumpkin- apparently there’s a national shortage and it hasn’t been in my grocery store since BEFORE Thanksgiving!! I’m so sad, pumpkin oats are my favorite.

  • Kelly January 29, 2010, 9:44 am

This is going to sound really weird, but I am a FIRM believer that you get you put out into the world. So sometimes whenever I have bad thoughts I try to banish them as quickly as possible. No use putting that negative energy out into the universe.

  • Faye January 29, 2010, 9:45 am

One day before i left for a bike ride i was convinced i was going to puncture, and i did. Another time i was convinced i was going to crash my bike, and i did…. These are things i now never think about before cycling!

  • Amanda January 29, 2010, 9:49 am

I frequently get deja vu and always have, although usually it comes with a sense of something bad happening and that part has always been wrong so far. I did, however, sense when we were going to lose my childhood dog. The summer after college I was living with my parents and her condition had been deteriorating, she was after all a 14 year old black lab, but she was doing alright. One morning I was on my way out the door to head to work but just before I went out the door I stopped, turned, and went to sit down with Sammy for a minute before I left. My job was about halfway between home and the vet and I spent that entire shift worried that my parents were going to come in and tell me to say goodbye to Sammy and when I got home they told me she had fallen asleep in the sun on the lawn and that she was gone. I was happy that I had somehow known to say goodbye to her that morning.

    Hi there!
you should definitely read “Life After Death” by Deepak Chopra. It is not a Christianity or any religion based book. He is very educated about spiritual connections and talks about how we live on different planes of the universe and we can tap into things by being consciously aware.

hope your person in your life is ok.
    have a good day!

That is very interesting, and I often wondered about those things. I have never felt “bad” things were about to happen, but very often some abnormally great things have happened for which I knew it would. Long story short, 1 500$ was stolen from me, two days later, a lady who had assisted to my recital (I’m a cellist) signed me a check of 1 500$. But all through out those two days of uncertainty, I KNEW it would some how be fine. I hope this person in your life is ok.

  • Katharine January 29, 2010, 9:56 am

I think you kind of mentioned this, but sometimes I wonder if it’s not so much US in those situations, but the person we’re thinking about who is reaching out. For example: A close relative of mine passed away the day before Christmas Eve. On the day of her funeral, about a week later, I got her Christmas card in the mail. I had recently moved so she’d had the wrong address and with all the forwarding that had to be done it didn’t arrive until that day. Freaky! So I think that was somehow her way of saying hi on a day that was hard for us all.

    Love this post 🙂

  • Gwen January 29, 2010, 10:03 am

I had a dream two nights ago that a coworker’s wife called to say she loved our save the dates. In my dream, an aunt that I don’t often speak to was in my house while I was on the phone. And then I went shopping for gifts for pregnant friends and couldn’t keep count of who was pregnant. YESTERDAY (while awake!)- when I got to work, that coworker told me how much his wife liked our STDs, I had an email from my aunt, and another dear friend told me she was pregnant. I think my dream totally had me connected to all of these people. I find that happens alot! It can be spooky and also a gift.

  • Jessica @ Fit Chick Wannabe January 29, 2010, 10:14 am

I definitely believe that you are connected to those who are close to you in that way. Kind of the way when you are around the same women all the time, you all have your cycles at the same time. Weird example, but true!

  • meghan January 29, 2010, 10:19 am

I have dreams pretty regularly that come too–but I don’t realize it until I’m in that spot when it happens…very deja vu! I once dreamt that a bridge collapsed; the next day one collapsed in Minneapolis–I live in Boston. VERY Spooky!

I can also sense when other women are pregnant–sometimes before they even know. This is a blessing indeed! :o)

  • Angela (Oh She Glows) January 29, 2010, 10:20 am

    YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!! that is so freaky.
I can’t recall ever having something like that happen to me, but I am a huge worry wart, so I often predict things that NEVER happen, thankfully.

  • Kristen January 29, 2010, 10:20 am

I definitely have moments of ESP like that.

Sorry to hear that someone in your life is going through something difficult. I hope things get better.

  • Pam January 29, 2010, 10:21 am

I don’t know exactly WHY or HOW, but I do feel like we have connections to people we’re close to. When I was 15 and my father died in a car accident, I was at a late movie and remember feeling an incredibly overwhelming sense of sadness(and it wasn’t a sad movie-Moulin Rouge). The next morning when my mom came to wake me up and tell me, I *refused* to get out of bed, knowing that either my father, his wife, or his mother had died.

On a “lighter” note, my only car accident ever came as I left class one day. I got in my car and said “Crap, I’m going to get in an accident today.” Guess what happened 15 minutes later?

  • Shelly January 29, 2010, 10:22 am

This happens to me not exactly frequently, but often enough that I think it’s more than a coincidence. I’ve known when a when a number of people have died. It also kind of runs in my family b/c my dad and my grandfather both experienced the same sort of premonitions. My grandfather called it is “zizzy-which” but I’ve never heard anyone else use that word. I also have a lot of little premonitions right before stuff happens like I’m going to trip and fall down (and then I do) and stuff like that. The other weird thing that happens to me is that I’ll hear an unlikely word or phrase over and over again in random conversations with different people over the course of several days. It will be something that you don’t hear often, like “periwinkle” or something like that. Collective unconscious, anyone?
The unfortunate thing is that I also have an anxiety disorder, and when it was bad, I would always wonder “Is this needless worry or a premonition.” It was usually needless worry, thankfully.

  • Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com January 29, 2010, 10:24 am

Wow that’s deep!! I’ve had moments like that, but I sha’t go into details – it’d require too much thinking time!!
Soo I’ll just say that your oats look delicious and leave it at that 😛

  • Bridget January 29, 2010, 10:26 am

I really hope that that everything is going to be okay with your friend. Premonitions are scary sometimes, but they can also be helpful. Sometimes we need the spiritual connection with the other person to get through things, or to be able to help someone else.

I had a dream that my fiancee and I were driving along one of our favorite roads near College Park. All of a sudden, he stopped the car, took my hand, looked deeply into my eyes and said “Bridget, it’s going to be okay.” That was THE moment when my phone rang, and it was his mom calling to tell me that he had passed away. It still makes me shudder. He’s often in my dreams though, especially during difficult times.

Animals have a keen sense of things, too.

The pumpkin yogurt looks amazing! Have yet to try it, but may try to make some with fresh pumpkin this weekend.

    Have a good weekend!

    • chandra h January 29, 2010, 12:49 pm

oh my god. I can’t imagine. god bless you and your dear fiance. your story brought me to tears… xo

  • Kerry (Running on Faith) January 29, 2010, 10:27 am

    That is CRAZY!

  • Whit January 29, 2010, 10:31 am

This is so weird. I completely did that a few years ago.

I got the freakiest feeling and it was on Halloween of all days. I thought it was just the whole ‘Halloween’ thing and thought nothing more of it. A few hours later I got a phone call and one of my friends had been killed in a car accident at around the same time I got the feeling.

    So freaky and so sad.

I hope everything will be ok with your friend. Praying!

    • Julie @SavvyEats January 29, 2010, 10:52 am

How sad! And how crazy that you *knew* at that exact time!

  • Hangry Pants January 29, 2010, 10:32 am

    (1) I agree about the pumpkin.

    (2) Once Mark and I had the same exact dream. I started explaining mine to him, he said wait stop I had the same dream. It was very silly – about a sweater. But to see if it was the same, we each drew a picture and it was the same.

    (3) When my grandpa died Mark asked me how he was doing because he was thinking of him. Then I found out he died.

    Mark is Walt on Lost.

    • Julie @SavvyEats January 29, 2010, 10:51 am

You mean, he has premonitions and gets kidnapped on a tropical island? 😉

  • Hangry Pants January 29, 2010, 10:32 am

P.S. I hope your friend is ok.

  • Molly January 29, 2010, 10:39 am

when i was in high school i had this very “important” (at least i thought so back then) meeting with student council and the school administration. in the middle of it, i just started bawling uncontrollably. we were not talking about anything sensitive (homecoming, maybe?)so the crying came out of nowhere. a few hours later, i was pulled out of class and told my good friend had passed away that morning. it was a total shock, but it’s like i knew the moment it happened and felt her pain as she passed. it’s still the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me- and hopefully it won’t ever happen again. i really hope your friend is ok. you’re in my thoughts.

  • Mary @ Fit this girl January 29, 2010, 10:45 am

I used to have dreams of things that I would see on the news. Nothing global like Haiti. But dreams like thick fog and a 20 car pile up, I was walking through burning cars and crying people. Three weeks later, I saw a story on the news of just exactly that. I have had those dreams & real event thing happen 4-5 times and not always as bad as that, but involving strangers or people I don’t know.

I think we are spiritual beings in a physical realm and that we are more connected to the spiritual realm than we even know. I think God speaks to people in dreams and that we can sense and know things through our spirit. I personally am working on deciphering what is my spirit and what is just worry, that and trying to really listen to God when I pray. I believe that there are different realms and planes right where we are with spiritual things happening around us! It does sound kind of funny! If time is liquid It better be coffee! I sure hope your friend is ok!!

There is a Libby’s plant in my home town, maybe I’ll have to send you some pumpkin!

    • Angela (Oh She Glows) January 29, 2010, 10:52 am

‘If time is liquid It better be coffee’

      one vote for Tequila 😀

  • Bernadette January 29, 2010, 10:56 am

It happens to me quiet often too! And I think you brought up a good point in your reply to Megan(Megzzwins), I have been super stressed lately and just mentally preoccupied and think I miss all kinds of things. For me the biggest was the morning of 9-11, I was up getting ready for my day and kept thinking I was hearing loud BOOMS (I’m in california by the way) and because it was not trash day and the noises were very loud I kept going to my window, checking the street in front of my house…nothing. But I had this very unsettling feeling and could not shake it! When I got to my sisters to drop off my daughter she had the TV on and they were showing the ‘news of the twin towers falling’ I had to sit and catch my breath because I knew that is what I had been feeling. I think we are all connected in one way or another but I also didn’t feel anything with Haiti and I wonder why…
    Have a great day!

  • Christyne January 29, 2010, 10:59 am

I started reading blogs about 2 months ago when a girlfriend from college (peanut butter fingers) started her own food blog, Through her blog roll I came across yours, which I absolutely LOVE. I went to UCF so it’s fun to see all your posts around town, because it always reminds me of my wonderful 4 years of college (I loved Orlando). I also love Operation Beautiful!!! I’m at stage of my life that I believe that being skinny means being pretty (& boy am I wrong) it’s comforting to look at your blog & OB and be grounded in the fact that my train of thought could not be farther from the truth. Anyhow, the reason for my comment is to let you know how since I’ve discovered the “blog world” my obsession for oatmeal has become excessive lol. As I child I always had oatmeal for breakfast but just plain jain oatmeal. That now hows changed. I also LOVE pumpkin and i’ve recently discovered pumpkin pie spice and every morning I (secretly) look forward to waking up & having my oatmeal sprinkled with pumpkin spice and a serving of low fat granola. It’s so filling and keeps me satisfied for hours and so YUMMY!! I know you like pumpkin as well, and sometimes I have trouble finding pumpkin puree so my substitute of using pumpkin pie spice tastes just as yummy (if not better =) ) and it’s always at the super markets!! Thank you for all your wonderful posts and constant inspiration.

  • Manda January 29, 2010, 11:05 am

i haven’t had a chance to read all the comments, so excuse if this has already been mentioned:
have you heard of The Intention Experiment? its a book but also a real ‘experiment’ that the author has challenged her readers. http://www.theintentionexperiment.com/
i haven’t finished it, but it was pretty profound, what i read of it. i wasn’t sure before, if your thoughts/feelings were actually ESP or just coincidence, but now i’m a believer. i also think you can work on developing your sixth sense. i think we like to call it our ‘gut feeling’ when we aren’t really sure of why we feel something. but if you are open and listening, there is a lot to ‘hear’.
i think there is no doubt that animals have souls as we do. you can’t look into your dogs eyes and think they don’t have a connection to you. i often feel ‘connected’ to my pooch.
as far as ‘is time linear’, well, some would say no. i watched an interesting doc about ancient cultures using mushrooms and other hallucinogenic to ‘transcend time’. i think a lot of people still do.

  • Andrea @ For the Love of the Run January 29, 2010, 11:10 am

I’m so sorry to hear something happened to your friend.

I had a very weird experience like yours just last year. As I was showering and getting ready for a day at work lifeguarding, I thought to myself “I really don’t think I’m fully prepared to rescue someone if something were to happen.” That day, a man had a heart attack in the pool and died. There were 2 other guards at the pool that day, and after the ambulance left, we all started talking about the incident, and they both said they woke up that morning with the feeling that something bad was going to happen. Isn’t it odd how all three of us had the same feeling?

  • Heather (Heather's Dish) January 29, 2010, 11:15 am

wow, that is crazy! i’ve never had that experience before, but i’ve heard so many stories about it. i would say that we’re all connected, and maybe that person’s name was placed in your mind to prepare you?

    i hope everything’s OK… :/

  • Liz January 29, 2010, 11:15 am

Sorry to hear about your bad news. Your brush of ESP is eerie. I have never had any thing like this happen to me, but I believe in it 100%. I have a family member who is very sensitive to these things and often has premonitions and even messages/signs from those who have passed.

  • anne January 29, 2010, 11:18 am

Yes yes! We’re all connected and just living in a delusion of separateness. Buddhism talks about this “addiction to the self” – but to study the self is to lose the self, and to lose the self is to drop into unity. There are all sorts of things going on that we can’t sense (for example, dogs can smell things we can’t, birds can see things we can’t) so I think “intangible” sorts of energy/messages/communication are totally plausible.

  • Amy January 29, 2010, 11:22 am

Theres a really interesting science out there, called Noetic Science, it deals with the research on this subject and other things.. check it out!!

  • Sarah January 29, 2010, 11:31 am

thats pretty freaky! hope your friend is ok! i have definetely have weird moments like that but it usually isn’t something bad just weird conincidences.

  • Christie @ Honoring Health January 29, 2010, 11:32 am

Yes, I have premonitions all the time, actually. It freaks me out some times. I also experience a lot of deja vu.

Only one time has it been “bad” and I surely hope I never go through this again. One day, I left work early because something just wasn’t right. I went home and my phone rang which was odd since it was so early in the day. It was my mom, she told me that my brother had been missing for two days. Hours later, I got a phone call from my dad telling me they had found my brother. He was dead, in his car underwater where he had been for two days. My dad and my brothers wife were the ones that found him.

Many people don’t believe in this stuff but it is real, I have no doubt.

  • Amber K January 29, 2010, 11:32 am

I’ve been reading the other comments and it is amazing what the human mind is capable of! I wish I had some sort of experience like that as well, I have never had any sort of ESP whether for something good or bad.

But I do feel lucky that where I live we still have canned pumpkin.

  • Annie January 29, 2010, 11:45 am

I believe that we are all deeply connected to one another, and how aware we are of the connections changes often. For me, running often has the effect of “clearing my head”, which really is another phrase for “clearing my energy”, and perhaps you sensed something because you were very clear at that time. It’s obvious from the amount of comments that you are not alone here!

  • Deva (Voracious Vorilee) January 29, 2010, 11:48 am

I have had instances like that in the past, and it can be scary! It is amazing what our brains are capable of and what we pick up from the energy around us.

  • Bronwyn January 29, 2010, 11:55 am

I think we all have that sensitivity to some degree. Most of us need an emotional connection to the person to know about it. But I bet a lot of people (who don’t even realize it) had a sense of something bad going on that day Haiti got hit.

We just don’t listen to that voice. It can be hard to distinguished between intuition and just random negative worries.

  • Jessica January 29, 2010, 11:55 am

I can’t say that I’ve had intense feelings prior to something happening, but did want to chime in on the dreams people have of their loved ones who’ve passed. A year ago this Feb. 8th, my 20 year old cousin, Krista, committed suicide. I grew up Catholic, and for months, I agonized about whether she was in heaven, hell or somewhere in between. I wanted her to be “okay” in whatever afterlife there was. Not soon after she passed, my friend went to a medium to “talk” to her boyfriend’s mom who’d passed away a few years ago…the 1st person that came to the medium was my cousin, Krista. My cousin told my friend through the medium that she was “okay”. I debated telling my aunt and cousins about the medium experience my friend had until I had the most vivid dream I’d ever had: Krista walked through my front door and was about to tell me something, but something scared her off and she disappeared. I woke up in the middle of the night totally freaked out. I went to the bathroom and actually said aloud “Krista, please come back to talk to me.” I fell asleep again and Krista came back in my dream, right where we’d left off. She was so clear-as if she was in the room with me. I could make out her freckles, almost feel her hair, her voice was the same, even if I hadn’t heard her speak to me in months. She told me that everything was okay. She was smiling and laughing. I woke up the next morning feeling an odd sense of peace. I called my aunt and my cousins to tell them about the dream. Turns out, my cousins, my two sisters and myself all dreamed about her telling us she was okay on the same night.

    • Julie January 29, 2010, 12:19 pm

      wow. chills.

  • Chloe @ Project Live Well January 29, 2010, 11:57 am

Thanks for posting this – yet another example of how we definitely have a sixth sense. I have experienced exactly what you described several times in my life. Some people insist it is just ‘coincedence’ but how can it be?

I don’t know how to explain it. Perhaps we all have the ability to be psychic?

That was a beautiful sunrise! Have a great day.

    Chloe

  • Julie January 29, 2010, 12:07 pm

I don’t think my sences are too in tune to anyone/anything to feel weird connection or get bad feelings. I am somewhat intuitive but not really.

Have you ever read The Secret? It’s all about the energy you put into the universe and what you can get back from it. Another good book about energy is “do dead people watch you shower”. It’s good if you believe in spirits (which I totally do) and it’s an easy read. Kind of fun and not too deep, but it explained strange occurences and stuff.

  • Karen W January 29, 2010, 12:10 pm

freaky about your ESP moment. I sense things from time to time but more of an intuition thing or I will be thinking about my husband and my phone will ring and it is him. on the pumpkin – that might be a Florida thing. We have it year round in Georgia. sorry 🙁 maybe you need to make a road trip for canned pumpkin!

  • Lauren January 29, 2010, 12:29 pm

Very interesting and timely post. Two weeks ago, I was talking to my boyfriend, at length, about my paternal grandmother, who had suffered from Alzheimer’s for nearly a decade. I was just reminiscing about her healthier years, when she remembered her children and grandchildren and wasn’t so frail. The last time I saw her, she had no memory of any of her loved ones. It was heartbreaking.

Anyway, I don’t usually dwell on the negative, and rarely talked about my grandmother with my boyfriend. Still, however random, the conversation I had that night was really cathartic and comforting.

Anyway, the next morning my dad called me to say that my grandmother had passed away the night before. She went peacefully, with my aunt by her bedside. I have to believe that I had some sense of her passing; that the flood of happy memories was her last gift to me.

  • Erin @ Big Girl Eats January 29, 2010, 12:34 pm

I am hysterical laughing at Heather’s comment. I also can’t read too many of these because now I am SUPER freaked out about energy, God, and other cool/creeptastic things. I have freaky dreams sometimes about other people, which makes me think about them, which I think has to mean something. I’ve had three instances in the past few days where I was reminded of my Grandpa who passed a few years ago – and these things were out of the blue. I’d like to think it means he’s trying to connect with me from somewhere, and to tell me that things in my life are going to work out, and to be happy 🙂

  • Erin @ Big Girl Eats January 29, 2010, 12:35 pm

And I hope your friend is okay! If you need some extra pumpkin from Rhode Izzle, just let me know! I haven’t noticed a shortage, or I just have too many cans in my pantry…

  • Kara January 29, 2010, 12:41 pm

Yesterday I woke up with the weird feeling that something was wrong. It just didn’t feel right in my house. Yesterday afternoon, we couldn’t get a hold of my grandma so my husband and dad went to check on her and she had passed away. She had passed that morning, when I woke up feeling like something wasn’t right in my house. I feel like she was there to say goodbye.

I totally believe our souls can sense things like this because I believe we are all connected on such a deeper level. I don’t think it is coincidence that you posted this today either.

  • Guen January 29, 2010, 12:42 pm

I have had many moments like that. Usually it’s a dream, with lots of meanings are warning signs. Sometimes I know a person is going to call me before they do. Lots of weird things like that.

  • Kim January 29, 2010, 12:56 pm

Wow, that’s crazy about the ESP. I’ve had this happen to me before. I think it has something to do with being very sensitive and intuitive, as kooky as that sounds…
I have a story: My mom was working as a physical therapist in a hospital in her early twenties. Suddenly, she thought of her twin brother. They weren’t close, so she thought it was weird. She looked at the clock and noted the time. Later that night, she found it that was the exact time he’d died after being in a car crash that day. Weird.
I hope your friend is ok!

  • Foy Update - Cook. Garden. Write. Repeat. January 29, 2010, 1:03 pm

The ESP thing doesn’t interest me, but the pumpkin thing does. Around Thanksgiving Cook’s Illustrated ran a little blurb about how Libby’s Pumpkin Puree is mostly hubbard squash (a type of butternut squash). So maybe what you really liks is canned butternut squash and not canned pumpkin?

  • Gracie @ Girl Meets Health January 29, 2010, 1:11 pm

I’m with you. I have deja-vu ALL. THE. TIME. Very vivid bouts of it. In fact, 99% of the time I have deja vu, I remember saying “I’m having deja vu” in the experience that I’m re-experiencing. Wow, I probably could’ve found a much better way to word that sentence, haha! Long story short, I think that there are definitely aspects of time that are completely beyond us. I’m a Christian, so I’m a big believer that there are different spiritual “realms” that we are unaware of (not saying you have to be a Christian or even religious to believe in that sort of thing).

I’m sorry to hear that something bad happened to your, er….acquaintance. I don’t know what I’d do if I had a premonition like that. Have you thought about telling them?

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 2:15 pm

he reads the blog so i’m sure he already knows i ‘knew’ beforehand! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIRD.

  • Laura @ Backstage Pass to Health & Happiness January 29, 2010, 1:14 pm

Wow so crazy – I think that intuition is a powerful thing, that’s for certain!
I’ve never had anything happen like your experience, but I have “called” or thought of certain things a day or couple days before they happened.
For instance, my boyfriend and I had to move out of our shared apartment this fall on short notice, and about a week before that I had been thinking of how crappy things were with our roommate and how much it would suck to pack all of our stuff (even though we thought it would be he who would have to move out). Sure enough, a few days later we received a strange note from our landlord with an ultimatum. There have been other instances with similar situations, where it’s not really a bone-chilling premonition but more of a calming thought, no panic, more of an acceptance of how things might change.
I consider myself to be a pretty emotional person, and I definitely believe in the power of one’s intuition in connection with emotion, so this was a very interesting post, indeed. More discussion, please!

  • Janessa (epicuriousvegan.blogspot.com) January 29, 2010, 1:27 pm

What a interesting post and chilling comments! I’m really glad you posted about this. I hope your friend is okay.

Most of us I think have some sort of “6th sense” that can manifest itself in different ways, and some people feel it stronger, or are more in tune with it, than others.

I think we all have a spirit of connectedness, and it seems to be deepening as the world moves forward. I don’t know if more people are talking about it, or more people are getting in touch with it, but I definitely sense a shift into the way we view the world and each other. Sensing things about our loved ones or the world seems mysterious, but I think it happens all the time.

And Caitlin, I totally get freaked out about time. I wish I understood physics more, because I have this incredibly strong belief that time is not linear. What’s the name of the book your husband is reading?

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 2:14 pm

Hmm I think he has it with him but I will post about it soon!

  • Devon January 29, 2010, 1:30 pm

I have dreams about people.. and then I end up seeing them the next day. It’s bizarre.
Example 1 – a few weeks ago, I had a completely random dream where I ran into the teacher of my insurance licensing class. I ran into him at Trivia the next night.

Example 2 – Last night, I had a dream about a marketing rep that works for one of the insurance companies we write through. He walked in the door about 20 minutes ago. He stops by every 3-6 months…. but he was here a month ago.

    I’m a freak.

  • hemp jogger January 29, 2010, 1:34 pm

so weird! hope they are ok. i’ve never experienced something quite like that, but many times, i’ll think ‘what time is it?’ and a number will pop in my head; lo and behold, i’m nearly always accurate! w/in a minute or two…always creeps me out a bit.

as for pumpkin, i had the hardest time finding it! but wanted to let you know…on amazon, in their groceries section, they sell libby’s by the bulk. i’ll probably order it in the spring summer. its too good!

  • Aliaha January 29, 2010, 1:45 pm

I have definitely had experiences like that before.

Last year I was out wedding dress shopping with friends and I suddently got this anxious feeling that I needed to pray like crazy that a particular family member got a DUI. It was the craziest feeling and completely out of the blue, since my family member rarely drank. They had been dealing with severe depression, but no issues with excessive drinking.

I took a few minutes to pray and literally- no joke, 10 minutes later I get a call from my mom to tell me that this family member got arrested for driving under the influence, completely smashed.. so dangerous.

It may seem like a weird thing to pray for.. but I would rather they be arrested than cause harm to themselves or someone else. Not to mention- the DUI caused them to admit to their depression and finally get help.

    crazy things can happen!

  • Ruth January 29, 2010, 1:45 pm

Sorry to hear that your friend is in distress. It is statistically (and neurologically) much more likely that your bad feeling and the unfortunate events were a coincidence. We don’t notice the times when our feelings don’t pan out, but we always remember when they do!

  • Beth @ DiningAndDishing January 29, 2010, 1:49 pm

I hope that person is okay now! Sorry to hear. I haven’t had anything like ESP before but I am always super interested when things like that happen to others. Creepy!

  • Christine January 29, 2010, 2:03 pm

I wonder about this stuff too…and I wonder about the self-fulfilling prophecy. Like when we wake up thinking that its going to be a bad day or that a certain event will occur, did that event happen bc it was going to happen, or because we attracted that event with our thoughts? (the laws of attraction).

What do you think about The Secret and the law of attraction and self fulfilling prophecy??

All this stuff is very interesting and I could ponder it for dayssssss. lol

    • caitlin January 29, 2010, 2:13 pm

i totally believe in the law of attraction – honestly, i think positive mantras, etc are totally responsible for getting me where i am right now in life in general.

  • Linda January 29, 2010, 2:19 pm

I believe that we are all connected and one and that is why we have premonitions about certain things. I also believe that when we get busy, distracted, anxious etc. it blocks the messages that are trying to come to us. I feel a lot more open now than a year ago and feel very connected to the Universe and all within. I go with gut feelings and what feels right for me. For example next week I am taking a week long yoga Immersion because I had a very strong feeling I should do it. I feel strongly that I am going to be a Yoga Instructor someday. Never had this entered my mind until about two months ago. Great Topic to have on your blog Caitlin!!

  • Rachel January 29, 2010, 2:28 pm

Someone stopped me once at a coffee shop and told be to wait 5 minutes before I left. I thought he was crazy so I just kind of laughed it off and made small talk for a few minutes before I left. Later, as I was driving up to stoplight, I saw that there had been a huge accident and a car that was driving through the intersection (like I would have been doing) got hit my a car who ran the light. Probably just a coincidence, but still creepy!

  • Andrea of Care to Eat January 29, 2010, 2:51 pm

I really hope your friend is okay 🙁 I do think that more people are more intuitive than others, which would probably describe you and what happened.
I hope I don’t come off as insensitive when I talk about pumpkin now 🙂 But, I think most canned pumpkin, like Libby’s, is not actually pumpkin – it’s some other type of squash I can’t remember the name of right now. The organic pumpkin cans are probably actual pumpkin which would be why it tastes different.

  • Caitlin in MD January 29, 2010, 3:15 pm

I’ve had this “emotional connectedness” (or whatever you want to call it) my entire life with both my (late) father and my younger brother. Not so much my mom, even though I am closer to her than anyone in the world. Although I think its because my dad and brother have both warranted a lot more “worry” over the years, if that makes sense. I’ve never worried about my mom – she’s got it together 🙂 Anyway, I won’t get into details about my dad, but he died suddenly at 53 and I knew it was going to happen. Its complicated, but it was almost like I was just waiting for it to happen. And my brother, well, I could share a lot of stories about him, but one in particular happened, actually, just about a week or two after our dad died. He was out with friends one night, and I was staying over at my mom’s. Sleeping in his bed, actually (as I didn’t live there at the time and didn’t have my own room). Around 2:30 in the morning, I SHOT out of bed awake, heart racing, with worried thoughts about his safety. Nothing in particular, just worry. About an hour and a half later, his friend called me from the ER saying that my brother’s lung had collapsed spontaneously…come to find out, RIGHT at the time I woke up so scared. It was bizarre.

  • Allison K January 29, 2010, 5:28 pm

This has happend to me twice, that I can remember.
My senior year of highshool I was on vacation with my family, and when I woke up I had a feeling that something bad had happend to one of my cousins. After we got home (that same day) my aunt was on the answering machine telling us that my Cousin had been in a terrible accident and that his passenger had passed away.
The second time (and I hope you appreciate this, with your love for Dogs!) was when my dog was killed by a coyote. I was 14 and had had a slumber party at a friends house. That night we’d had an earthquake, so when I got home I eagerly asked my mom how the dog had done in the earthquake. She got this look on her face and said that the dog was missing. She had let him out before the quake (the epicenter was pretty far from where we were, so we felt shaking, but no major damage) and he hadn’t ever come back. I looked up and down the street for him. I eventually took a nap and dreamt of my dog running towards me in a field, he jumped into my arms, licked my face and then scampered off. When I woke up, I looked out my bedroom window and saw my mom’s mini-van pulling into the driveway.I just new that they had found him, and he was no longer with us. I don’t know if animals have souls and can communicate through dreams, that is a little out there for me, but maybe I knew and it was my subconcious’ way of telling my dog good bye?

eeeeek! Last year, my mom’s fiance was sick and progressively getting worse and I didn’t ever want to ask, “well is he…going to die?” because that was just way too negative and scary to think about. So, my mom and I booked a flight and hotel to visit my future college (uvm! holla!) and he wasn’t feeling so great that weekend so my mom decided to stay and I went by myself! So that weekend I just kept texting her to say wassup because I was always busying talking to people and whatnot. The night before I was coming home (I had been there for 2 nights already), I decided to finally call her to ask about my flight and stuff. So I called and she picks up and goes, “let me call you back” and so 5 minutes later, she calls back and said that he had just passed away! 🙁 ! It was just so freaky that I had called 2 minutes after he had passed… and I didn’t know that THAT COULD HAPPEN! It was terrible, but also made me realize how close you can be with someone and stuff becomes like natural instincts or somethang. CRAZY SHIZ! No worries though, my mom is the most optimistic, strongest woman alive 😀 Power to da woman!

I have definitely had a moment like that – and it was about a friend who died unexpectedly in an accident – very freaky and horrible.

I loved reading all these responses. I was definitely more in tune with the spiritual side when I was younger. I regularly saw angels, etc. My great-grandmother was involved in the occult (i don’t know details) and my mom and her mom would regularly see cats walk through windows and scary stuff with dolls and to this day my mom just can’t be around those ceramic dolls whose eyes open and close.
Sad story: My uncle committed suicide in the early 80’s and my mom, like another commenter, really worried about his soul. She said that he came to her in a dream and told her that he was okay and asked for forgiveness.

I have hesitations about the whole positive thinking craze going on right now because in the Christian scene its heavily focused on wealth and material possessions which is completely contrary to the teachings of Jesus. I believe though to a certain extent, that positive thinking is really great. I try to switch my thoughts and think more logically to help my own anxiety and it really helps me. I think it’s also great for building confidence.

Hi Stephanie. I think the whole “prosperity” thing going on with Christianity right now is so bogus and weird. But I do believe there is room for positive thinking. I try to think positively all the time, and simultaneously I take delight in my “simple” life and remain grateful for what I have. Also, I am sorry to hear about your uncle. I’m glad you decided to post a response.

First, I hope that whatever happened gets better.

Second, I like to think that there’s more to life than we can see with our eyes. I mean, sure it might sound out there, but it’s kind of comforting to think there is something way bigger than us, connecting us and keeping tabs.

I’ve actually dreamed 4 times of people being pregnant and then found out very shortly thereafter that they were! Two of them were accidents, so there was no way for me to know. I’ve dreamed of people in my family who have passed away and it gives me the greatest feeling of peace. It’s so sad to wake up, but I truly feel like they can visit you in your dreams.

My mom has crazy good intuition. Always had. I really think it’s a gift and that some people are more connected to a certain part of their brain than others. They say we only use about 8% of what we could be using up there so who knows what we could all do with 100% or even just with 15%. One of the craziest examples was that I had this friend in elementary school who I would go visit and have playdates with. Her dad was a bit weird but it didn’t matter to me because I was like 6 and her and I would just play in her room or outside the whole time. She had a baby sister that was an infant so her mom was usually busy with the baby. One day my mom told me I couldn’t go over there anymore and if I wanted to play with my friend she had to come to our house. I didn’t understand why but my mom just said that when she picked me up the last few times she got a really bad feeling and refused to let me stay over there anymore. About 10 years ago my mom called me and asked if I remembered that family and how upset I was that she wouldn’t let me go play at their house. I told her yes I remembered. She said, “I just got a call from a mutual friend, the daughter that was a baby when you used to play there has come out and admitted that the father sexually abused her since her infancy. She said it’s been happening for as long as she can remember and he did things to her even when she was a toddler up until a few years ago.” My mom sensed the evil in him and even though she couldn’t put her finger on it, she knew that to protect me, I couldn’t go to that place anymore. God only knows what could have happened to me if I was there longer. I mean, if he did it to his own daughter what would have stopped him from doing it to me too? How crazy is that!

I have an identical twin sister and we’ve had so many twin esp moments that I couldn’t even begin list them all. The recent one took place last Thursday. Mind you I live in Alabama and she lives in New York.

I was riding in the car with my brother road tripping up to New York to go stay with her for our birthday. We had been calling each other back and forth throughout the day checking in with each other. Until we were involved in an accident where a 18-wheeler slammed into the side of us going 65mph down the highway. Luckily my brother didn’t slam on the breaks but sped up and pulled us out of it without losing control! (it was a nightmare 10 seconds that could have been fatal for us all!) Anyways – the moment we pulled over on the side of the road to speak with the driver – My twin sister calls my brother’s cell phone and said she had a bad feeling and wanted to know if everything was okay??!?! After we explain to her what happened she was like OMG, I knew something was up and that is why I didn’t call Joy’s number because I was afraid something happened to her. I completely lost it and cried for awhile. So yeah, it is kinda freaky how we can “sense” things about each other. I’m glad we are like that though. I know to always trust my instincts/feelings because they DO mean something!
