I Have a Sister!

in All Posts

My early morning run seemed to put a damper on my normal appetite today.  I wasn’t craving a mid-morning snack, but I figured I should eat something just to re-fuel:

And about an hour later, I had lunch:

I love BAKED TOFU!  Coat it in maple syrup and pepper and pop in the oven for 30 minutes.  It’s so simple and amazing.

With rice and green beans.

I’m currently eating this bowl of yogurt and granola.  I have to go into job #2 today (groan) and need to get my snack in ASAP.

I Have a Sister!

Fun fact about me:  I’m an only child.  So, when I married the Husband, I was very excited to get not only 1 sibling, but 4!  The Husband has 1 sister and 3 half-brothers.

I always, always wanted a sister growing up.  Sophie is a great sister-in-law!

Here’s Sophie and my mother-in-law at our rehearsal dinner:

CIMG0042

And here’s my family on the subway in England in 2006.  We were going to watch a soccer/football match.  Notice how my mom, myself, and my brother in law are all wearing jerseys, and Sophie is wearing a glamorous dress.

Sophie was also one of my bridesmaids.  I was very honored that she wanted to be a bridesmaid!

Florida Jan 09 072

Sophie is one of the most glamorous women I’ve ever met.  I think she’s secretly a celebrity in hiding.  I probably sound really dorky saying this, but she’s just so COOL.  Hell, she lives in LONDON and goes on vacations to Italy and Africa!  She’s also extremely fun and has been a great big sister to the Husband.

GUESS WHAT?

After 8 long years, Sophie FINALLY received her green card and is moving to Florida from England!  The whole family (especially me!) is so excited.

Sophie is a runner, too and we have plans to do a few 5Ks together.  Wahooo!

Do you feel like you "fulfill" your only, middle, youngest, or oldest child "role"?

I have always wondered if you are an only child. I am too. If they boy and I ever get married I will have a sister and a brother. As a kid I never wanted siblings, but I definitely love the boy's sister! I feel like we can talk about anything! How exciting that your SIL is moving close by!!

  • Lainie August 28, 2009, 9:46 am

She does look awfully glamourous..,.stunning! I am a middle child, and yes, I think I fulfill the role. I am a people pleaser, a peace maker and just like people a combination of an introvert and an extrovert.

  • Kristen @ Simply Savor August 28, 2009, 9:47 am

im an only child too! although when people find out they always say "really? you dont seem like an only child" –im still not really sure what that means! haha but im really close with my cousins who are like brothers + sisters to me. thats so great that you'll have your sister in law nearby! family is the best 🙂 happy friday!

  • Jenna August 28, 2009, 9:49 am

    she looks so stylish!
and yes i totally think i fulfill my role as being the oldest child in my family and the oldest cousin out of 13!

  • Eve August 28, 2009, 9:50 am

That's so exciting!! It will be so nice to have her nearby. I have one sister, once I married my husband I got 4 more sisters! None of them live in NYC though, so I don't see them very often.

  • Pam (Highway to Health) August 28, 2009, 9:50 am

What exciting news! Having a sister is a lot of fun!

  • Mandy (Pregnant with Nutrition) August 28, 2009, 9:52 am

She is glamorous! I think Europeans can be that way without even trying.
Anyway, I am an oldest child and have all of the traits. The bad thing is, my husband is also an oldest child with all of the traits. Makes things interesting.

  • K from ksgoodeats August 28, 2009, 9:52 am

As an only child, I am so excited to have "siblings" when I get married! I've always wanted a sister as well. I'm so excited for you that your SIL is moving to Florida!

  • Rosey Rebecca August 28, 2009, 9:56 am

That's so exciting!! I am the youngest child and only girl in my family. I have two older brothers. My brother's fiancee is like my sister though. They've been dating for 7 years!!

  • Annamarina (Running Tails) August 28, 2009, 9:58 am

I'm the youngest and I would have to say my big brother does a better job at fulfilling his role – he has always looked out for me. I'm lucky to have a wonderful older brother! I was always a brat to him growing up 🙂 Not anymore though!

  • Bec August 28, 2009, 9:59 am

Aww thats so exciting! I am a mix of middle child/oldest as my older brother is 8 years older then me so in some ways I act as the oldest.

  • Meg C. August 28, 2009, 10:00 am

having a sister is fun! i'm glad you will get a chance to have a sister in law living nearby.

i'm not sure i fulfill the "oldest child" role that well, but it's interesting to note that every guy i've dated has also been an oldest child.

  • runsarah August 28, 2009, 10:01 am

That is awesome! I am a younger sister but have a niece so I get to be a bit of a big sister/auntie too 🙂

  • Whitney@whitsgettingfit August 28, 2009, 10:01 am

How exciting! And I seriously just e-mailed you about how you bake your tofu, and then I read this post where you ate tofu.

  • Thinspired August 28, 2009, 10:04 am

Sophie sounds like an awesome lady! Congrats to her about her green card–what's the secret?! Hehe. We just got back from our interview at the US Embassy in London. It's such a stressful process!

  • Jenn Eats Nutritiously Now August 28, 2009, 10:08 am

Honestly, I love being the youngest. I get all the attention now that the older sister is moved out and married (love you, Em, if you are reading!).

  • Tami August 28, 2009, 10:10 am

i think i would want to live in London vs FLA-sorry! but i am glad she is moving to be near her family. maybe a few guest posts from the glamorous sister in law will be in the future….

i am the youngest of 4 and i have always played my role very well.

  • Anonymous August 28, 2009, 10:11 am

I honestly thought another blogger, Kelly, was your sister! You look related (and are both very pretty)!

  • Lizzy August 28, 2009, 10:15 am

i'm the youngest child in my fam, and you better believe they remind me of it all the time! hahahaha 🙂

  • lilybeans August 28, 2009, 10:16 am

    Super News!

I am an only child and have been told that I don't act like one. I would give this credit to my mom who always kept me in check. I am also an only grandchild (crazy I know!) and I can't say I wasn't spoiled by them. Isn't that what grandparents are for anyway?!

    Happy Friday!

  • Anonymous August 28, 2009, 10:17 am

i thought kelly was related to you too! you two look a lot alike!

  • Leah @ L4L August 28, 2009, 10:25 am

I think that my family situation is rather unique… or not.

I was an only child until I was 10 so I have some of those tendencies.

Then my little brother came into the picture so most of the time, I do fit the role of "oldest" sibling and that is what I identify with the most.

And then a few years ago, my mother remarried and I got 3 step brothers and a step sister, 2 older, 2 younger. So it's like I am a middle child too! But I still identify with being the oldest the most. But it's nice having a big sister to turn to now!

  • Ali August 28, 2009, 10:27 am

I always wanted a sister too, I have one brother. When I get married (in 10 months..eeeeekkkk) I will have FOUR sisters! YAY!

I am the youngest and I totally act like the older sibling without a doubt. My brother is 4 years older than me and fills the youngest role perfectly. Strange I guess, I never thought of it until now.

  • tracik August 28, 2009, 10:28 am

Sisters are great! Mine are my best friends. There's 4 girls in my family and I'm #3. It's funny I'm #3 and 6 years younger than my oldest sis but she (and everyone) always comment that I act like the oldest and take care of everyone. Congrates on Sophie coming to live here. So much fun!

  • Megan @ Megzz Wins At Life August 28, 2009, 10:39 am

Sophie is beautiful!!! She looks like she walks into a room and everyone turns there head to look at her!! I am really excited for you!! My sister is ten years younger than me but it is still really fun to always have somone to do girly stuff with!

  • Kristie Lynn August 28, 2009, 10:47 am

I'm the oldest of 5… and it definitely shows. I am very organized and take charge of a lot by nature. But I had to be the responsible one growing up to "set an example" so I'm not too surprised. My husband is the youngest of 4 though… and yeah, that shows too. He's lucky to have me 😉

  • Sara August 28, 2009, 10:53 am

Yay, that's such exciting news. She does like quite suave! It's so nice to have family close by.

  • Tay August 28, 2009, 10:57 am

Oh how fun!! Those dang English women – so glamorous 😉 I love love your bridesmaid dress choice. Beautiful. I'm glad you sister is moving close to you!

  • Stephanie August 28, 2009, 10:58 am

I have 2 sisters and although I'm the youngest, I always feel like the middle child because until recentlt my two sisters didn't get along so I've always felt like a "link" between the two. I did gain a brother through marriage which has been interesting to say the least! lol

  • brandi August 28, 2009, 11:00 am

that's so exciting that she's moving closer! I love having my family pretty close to us.

I'm a middle child, through and through 🙂

  • Mandy August 28, 2009, 11:10 am

I am the oldest of four kids… and definitely like my role of being the oldest 🙂 I got everything first… haha! And I seem to try to control things a bit more now… which i think comes from being "in charge" so much growing up!

My husband was an only child… so you can imagine how many times we struggle for that controlling role! 🙂

Sophie is gorgeous!! So excited for her and the family that she's moving closer!

  • Jenna August 28, 2009, 11:11 am

That is so exciting!!! You have got to be so jazzed 🙂

I am the youngest child with an older brother. There are times where I think I do fulfill the youngest child role, thinking that I deserve the world. Being the baby, I should get all the attention, right? (I don't actually think this, hehe).

Other times, I am the serious straight laced child taking on more of the responsibilities. I guess it just depends on the situation.

Have a good day Caitlin! TGIF 🙂

  • RhodeyGirl August 28, 2009, 11:11 am

THAT IS GREAT NEWS CAITLIN!!!!! HAS SHE BEEN LIVING IN ENGLAND ON HER OWN WAITING FOR THE GREEN CARD TO JOIN HER FAMILY????

  • Naji August 28, 2009, 11:12 am

So happy for you! I have 5 sisters and one brother I am the youngest it shows for sure and I love it! haha

  • Liz August 28, 2009, 11:12 am

Sounds like you have a pretty awesome sister-in-law. She does look like a movie star! Try ti have as much fun as you can at job #2!

  • Lindsey August 28, 2009, 11:25 am

I am an only child too! I think i fulfill the role quite well. I do share more than most only children. 🙂 Thanks to the husband I now have a younger sister-in-law. She is only thirteen so it is really fun to get to see her grow up!

  • Carrie H August 28, 2009, 11:47 am

Oh my gosh, I am such a middle child and totally fit the role, for better or worse! Ha ha, I'll just leave it at that …

  • Beth @ CrossBorderCravings August 28, 2009, 11:53 am

That's super exciting! Although too bad she has to leave London – awesome city!

I'm the middle child and def. fufill that role. I always felt like I got NO attention growing up! But now I love being in the middle because I'm close with both my brother and sis :O)

  • Laura August 28, 2009, 12:22 pm

I just have to say that I LOVE your bridesmaids dresses………just beautiful!!! =) And, you can wear it again after the wedding. Great pic!

  • Anne Marie August 28, 2009, 12:25 pm

That's so awesome about your sister!

I am the middle child and I definitely fulfill my role. The older and the younger siblings get all the attention 😉

  • Jolene - EverydayFoodie August 28, 2009, 12:26 pm

Wow – that is so awesome! She sounds like the perfect sister in law. You are going to love having her so close! A built in friend!

  • skinnyrunner August 28, 2009, 12:30 pm

your sister is gorgeous! those yellow bridesmaid dresses are really pretty too!

  • ~Jessica~ August 28, 2009, 1:02 pm

I never wanted a brother/sister when I was younger, but I wish I had a brother now…sisters would be difficult because I think there would be too much comparison and competitivity between us (or there would be if my hypothetical sister shared my personality). The idea of an older brother is lovely though…someone to protect and care for you. People always guess that I'm an only child, which may or may not be a good thing!

It's fantastic that you may have another running buddy and that picture of the three of you really made me smile ~ she dresses like an A-List celebrity (I mean that in a good way)

And from your earlier post, I have to say I'm incredibly jealous of your veggielicious t-shirt!

Thank you for being so incredibly patient and understanding with me.

    <3

  • Nikky August 28, 2009, 1:08 pm

I have 9 siblings, but I've been EVERY role. I lived with my grandma instead of my mom until my grandma's death, so I got to spend my first 10 years as an only child. I did have two older half brothers, but our dad is in prison so we were never really close. Then, I got to be middle child when my mom and step dad moved in after my grandma passed, with my step dads two older kids and my 4 younger "half" siblings (by my mom and step dad). THEN after my step dad left when I was 13, I got to play oldest (we still see his kids sometimes though). My mom had to work evenings after he took off so I did all the cooking and stuff after school from age 13 on.

After my life story there (I SOOO tend to babble), I'd have to say I definately think I played the "oldest" role the best, and it was my favorite one! Hard sometimes, but my younger siblings are my entire world, like my own children, and I wouldn't trade my years of hard-labor babysitting for anything!

  • Jenny August 28, 2009, 1:09 pm

woo sophie is gorg! you're hubs must love being surrounded by such beauty his whole life.. his sister, his wifey..lucky dude!

  • HangryPants August 28, 2009, 1:28 pm

Sophie looks glamorous. Does she have a cool bristish accent? does your husband?

anyway, i am 4/5 and in a lot of ways i fit the role. i get out of planning and coordinating a lot because there are 3 older girls. now, though, my little brother is married and having a baby, so he seems a lot older than me. 😀

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point August 28, 2009, 2:03 pm

i love reading about everyone's family – so fun!!!

both anons – hahah everyone says kelly looks like me! she's actually meghann's (graduatemeghann.com) sister. weird, huh?

rhodey – yup! 8 long years!! isnt that crazy?

hangry – yes they both have sweet accents LOL

    jessica – you rule.

  • Anonymous August 28, 2009, 2:59 pm

I wish I could be like you! My SIL is also glamorous, and beautiful, lives in Manhattan…but I'm jealous more than anything! I don't want to be, but I am. I wish I were the center of attention and wore fabulous clothes. I guess that's something I need to work on. 🙂

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point August 28, 2009, 3:50 pm

anon – i think of it like this: it must be very expensive (and tiring) to be so glamorous. LOL i will let someone else have all the fun! hehe

  • Tea Time August 28, 2009, 4:12 pm

Your sister-in-law IS glamourous. She has great skin tone!

  • NYgirl@heart August 28, 2009, 4:48 pm

I'm the youngest but I'm 8 and 11 years younger than my sisters so I grew up mostly as an only child. I was always the "spoiled" one, but that was mostly because my middle sister always felt bad that we were so far away from each other so she used to send me fun gifts to make up for it. (we moved to upstate NY when she graduated HS, they both stayed behind in Queens)
I'm not a brat and never was but I was always treated like a baby…even now–my sisters still call me their "Little Sister" and I just turned 30. My mom calls me her baby (i.e. "my baby girl is coming home Or "That's my baby girl!") She brought a sign to my 15K last month that said "Go La Nicolita!" with the same flowers she drew on my lunch bag in elementary school. Some people think it's cute (the sign was kind of funny) but both my mom and my sisters really still do look at me as a baby and I keep reminding me I'm a big girl now!! Dammit!! lol
    BTW
Sophie is absolutely gorgeous. She reminds me of my middle sister … she always looks good, even if it's going to a sporting event or the gym (hair, makeup, cute matching outfit etc.) I'm glad you'll have a sister around to play with when she gets to Florida!! 😉

  • Kelly August 28, 2009, 6:01 pm

Haha, yup- I definitely fullfill my role as oldest child- very responsible and like to take care of people. However, they say oldest children like to date youngest, that has never been the case for me-I date all other oldest. I don't want to take care of someone all the time haha.
So do you fit the role of only child haha? Since I teach little kids I always try to pay attention to whether or not they fit the role, often they do- but not always. It's interesting.
