Do You Fixate?

in All Posts

Afternoon!  All is well in my world, considering it’s a Monday.

OK — by now I’m guessing you’re really, really sick of hearing of my Twilight obsession (I subjected readers to it last fall as well, it’s just been re-triggered by the DVD release), but I downloaded the Twilight Soundtrack this morning and it is so, SO good.  Very emo.  Very good running music.  I really recommend it!

Lunch was delicious and simple:

Rice and pinto beans (3/4 cup of each):

My mouth AND tummy were satisfied after this meal.

Do You Fixate?

The Husband made the observation last week that whenever I get discover something, I become HYPER fixated on that one thing.  It could be a food, a particular song, a book, a movie, running, whatever — I’ll find a new song I love and I will listen to it over and over and over again.  I get a new DVD and I’ll watch it 3 times in 5 days (uhhh, Twilight!).

I like learning the deep intricacies of a song, a book, a movie.  Maybe it’s because I’m a creative person…. or maybe I find comfort in the familiar.  But the thing I love  most of all is how the familiar offers up surprises when you observe it long enough.  There’s more in a movie than what you gleam on a first — or second — watch.  A song lyric pops out on the 30th listen that you ignored on the first.

Do you fixate on favorite songs, books, or movies like me? Or do you prefer to dabble a little bit in everything?

I fixate! I will listen to a song nonstop on repeat if I love it, for days and days. And I remember watching Jerry Maguire every day as soon as I came home from school in 8th grade. Haha… And when I love a book I will read every review and piece of information on it I can find.

  • VeggieGirl March 30, 2009, 9:48 am

YES!! I definitely fixate on music 🙂

  • therunningaddict March 30, 2009, 9:51 am

    YES, I DO!
My mom thinks its ridiculous that I do it with books! She cannot understand how can I read the same thing over and over again!
As a matter of fact, I fixate so much that I can memorize parts of the text!
Of course this also applies to music, food, what not….

  • aussirish March 30, 2009, 9:51 am

i fixate non stop! I though it was just me who did that 🙂 and the twilight obsession…i can completely relate…the movies not out over here yet but when it is, il probably watch it everyday for a week!
    lunch looks great!

  • redheadedjournal March 30, 2009, 9:52 am

Sometimes I fixate on a new song that I like.

  • ksgoodeats March 30, 2009, 9:57 am

Yes! I definitely fixate! Especially with food I like haha!

  • fitforfree March 30, 2009, 9:59 am

Ohhh I definitely fixate!! On music, books, movies . . . and it makes me feel like I don’t have a broad enough knowledge base about any of those things. But I’m glad to hear your take on this . . . we definitely have a deeper understanding of the things we love than other people may!

  • Tami March 30, 2009, 10:01 am

oh, i think we all fixate whether we like to admit or not.

  • Brandi March 30, 2009, 10:01 am

yeah, I fixate too. I’ll listen to one cd over and over for weeks until Nick makes me take it out of the player in the car 🙂 Once I find something I love (movies, music, food, books) I just want to keep seeing/hearing/reading/eating it!

  • LT March 30, 2009, 10:06 am

Oh yes, I definitely get obsessive over things. It’s pretty ridiculous.

  • balancemycake March 30, 2009, 10:06 am

I tend to fixate sometimes! Like right now, I’m very obsessed with a few Italian songs and I keep playing them over and over again and I’m pretty sure my roommates want to hurt me. Haha jk. When I get an idea in my head…be it music, TV, or about a vacation, it’s stuck! This happened years ago when I decided I wanted my belly button pierced…after putting it in my head, there was no turning back..I researched and researched and thought about it for months on end until I finally did it! So I hear ya Caitlin! 🙂

I think this is where you and I are quite similar. Yes, I fixate. I will listen to a song over and over and over again. Great post. Sure makes a person think about themself.

  • Danielle March 30, 2009, 10:14 am

I totally fixate on things! I can listen to the same song over and over and if I find something I like I look up everything about it on the internet, whether it be a certain band, or a movie. I get easily obsessed.

  • TSNAC March 30, 2009, 10:18 am

Fixate… Especially on books that I’m loving, crafts, and puzzles!

  • Kelly March 30, 2009, 10:25 am

    I totally fixate!

Hey, where did you download the Twilight soundtrack?

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point March 30, 2009, 10:27 am

kelly – itunes. there’s the score (Classical) and soundtrack (Pop/Emo). Both are good!

  • Amanda March 30, 2009, 10:31 am

Hi, I just found your blog. I definitely fixate on things. Once I find a new interest, I want to learn everything about it.

  • Megan March 30, 2009, 10:32 am

I’m a HUGE fixator [?] on FOOD! Whenever I find a recipe I love or make something that is just so delicious, I’ll eat it for days in a row! The other week I feel in love with this wrap I made and I had it four days straight for lunch! I only had to stop because I ran out of tempeh to put in it!!

  • Missy March 30, 2009, 10:32 am

Yes! I fixate on music and food! If I find a food I like, I end up eating it every day in a row for like a month!

  • Chelsey March 30, 2009, 10:36 am

I definitely feel you on the Twilight soundtrack. Somewhere I found where someone had put all the soundtrack songs into the score where they occur in the movie, and for several weeks that was all I listened to when I ran. So many of the soundtrack songs are GREAT for running – I especially love Supermassive Black Hole, Go All the Way, Tremble for My Beloved, and Spotlight.

  • Sara March 30, 2009, 10:39 am

I love your Twilight fixation! It’s fun to read about because I know I’d be in the same situation, if I had bought the movie. 🙂 Great lunch. So simple, yet so yummy.

  • Erin March 30, 2009, 10:44 am

I don’t fixate on dvds but definitely on songs and food! I will have a song on repeat for weeks, and then switch. I also eat the same foods alllll the time!

  • Lynne March 30, 2009, 10:50 am

I most definitely fixate, be it on a song, movie, or book.

  • Jen March 30, 2009, 10:51 am

Yeah, I think I fixate! The thing is I notice I don’t as much as I did when I was younger, say in highschool…back then I would get a new CD and OBSESS over it, read all the lyrics, listen to it constantly, etc, but now it’s a much more subtle fixation and I also no longer cover my bedroom in posters of whatever my particular fixation may be 🙂

  • Anonymous March 30, 2009, 10:59 am

I think just the general tendency to “fixate” on something is usually a trait of an more obsessive, intense personality (maybe a bit Type A?!) I didn’t mean for that to sound bad, we all have it to a certain degree, but some more than others.

I have an “obsessive, intense personality,” that makes me well, obsessive and intense about certain things in my life! This gives me great determination and focus, but if I don’t watch it, it can be TOO much and I need to get back to a better balance and moderation in general.

Again, I don’t mean this comment as a bad one! I think people who have this kind of personality are usually quite talented, driven and reach their goals more so than others… You apparently have these tendencies, and I can also see it in other bloggers. I love Jenna at Eat, Live, Run, but you can see it with her too – hyper-focus and fixation on different things all the time – a trait that has helped her accomplish all the she has!

  • dawn March 30, 2009, 11:02 am

Absolutely! And I have to admit, I share your Twilight fixation. I think I’ve read the books 4x each now and watched the movie… more times than I’d like to admit 😉 I’m just so in love with the story (and Edward!) that nothing else compares!

  • Matt March 30, 2009, 11:03 am

I fixate! But then I get tired of it and fixate on something else! Haha.

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point March 30, 2009, 11:04 am

    anon – i am wicked type A. 🙂

  • Tina March 30, 2009, 11:05 am

I’m a dabbler. I get bored very easily!

  • Amy March 30, 2009, 11:08 am

I fixate, and I’m definitely Type A. I don’t mind! I went to a college with a high concentration of Type A people — which was fun to observe at times.

I’m willing to bet that a lot of people in the food blog world here are type A – especially based on the answers to this question.

Nothing wrong with being Type A, if you ask me!

  • kirsten March 30, 2009, 11:19 am

I definitely do that with music and tv shows

  • Amy March 30, 2009, 11:21 am

I totally fixate and have for as long as I can remember. Right now I’m fixated on Kelly Clarkson’s new cd. I still remember in middle school when I would listen to Madonna’s music pretty much every day. Then it was Celine Dion…No Doubt…lol I do it with books and movies as well.

  • Lauren March 30, 2009, 11:24 am

I totally fixate on one thing. Especially right now, my husband and I are challenging each other for 45 days to lose weight for a prize. so maybe its good that I tend to fixate more on one thing. 🙂

  • Mica March 30, 2009, 11:41 am

I totally fixate, though I always just say that I have a “one-track mind”. Sometimes, I think it’s a pain, but it helps me get something done when I set my mind to it!

  • Bec March 30, 2009, 11:44 am

I can read books over and over again, and I still love them!

  • Leila March 30, 2009, 11:45 am

I totally hear you Caitlin on fixating. If I discover a new food, I tend to eat it for days on end. I eventually move on, but for the first bit, I just can’t get enough. The same for albums/songs, I’ll listen to them over and over and then I just move on.

  • Carolina John March 30, 2009, 11:55 am

you mean you fixate on things like easter crack? i hadn’t noticed. actually, the easter candy gets me every time too. i fixate on some things for a long time, and get very intense about it. like triathlon or blogging. then one day just walk away. next up? my brain is telling me wooden boat construction. i don’t know why.

  • Abby March 30, 2009, 12:07 pm

Is it possible to fixate on a lot of different things at once?

  • Trish March 30, 2009, 12:18 pm

I fixate on songs – I will listen to the same one over and over and over and over – then a few more times! 🙂 I do it with food too. I find something I like and I will eat it every single day for the longest time.

  • Lindsay March 30, 2009, 12:23 pm

I am totally become fixated with items, whether it easy eating the same meal, because I think it is delicious, or watching the same movie because it has an awesome plot. I think that all humans have a drive to want to have a positive outcome from whatever they do, therefore they choose to only do the things over and over again that produce positive results…. by the way, I do not mind the twilight obsession, I am obsessed too!!

  • coley March 30, 2009, 12:23 pm

uhh YEAH! 5 out of 6 of the CDs in my car are coldplay and I listen to them EVERYDAY! I’ve listened to the newest one, Viva la Vida everyday since its release last June… I know its crazy:)

  • sloank March 30, 2009, 12:25 pm

I am definitely that way!! My sister made fun of me because I made her drive for a solid hour listening to the SAME song!

  • RunningWithin March 30, 2009, 12:34 pm

Oh, I definitely fixate, I do it with a food that I decide I love and will eat pretty much every day for months, a new passion (running, yoga, etc), songs, etc. lol But hey as long as it makes us crazy type A’s happy it’s all good right? : )

  • runsarah March 30, 2009, 12:44 pm

I fixate with foods, and music…not so much movies and books though!

  • sloank March 30, 2009, 12:58 pm

ps, I LOVE the twilight soundtrack so I sympathize with fixating on it 🙂

  • Lisa D. March 30, 2009, 1:02 pm

i can listen to the same song over and over and over again, i think it really bothers my roomates but I just don’t get tired of it! Also, you have me craving some rice and beans now! yum

  • Angie Eats Peace March 30, 2009, 1:06 pm

I totally fixate. Twilight has got me right now.

  • Leah @ Simply Fabulous Now March 30, 2009, 1:55 pm

Love your lunch! Yummy chocolate you had afterwards! 🙂

Yes. I get fixated on songs! Especially since I am constantly listening to songs for my wedding!

  • aron March 30, 2009, 2:18 pm

the twilight soundtrack is SOOOOO good!! I ran to the whole thing for many, many weeks 🙂 still have a few of the songs on it.

    I am definitely a fixator 🙂

  • Adi (oatonomy.com) March 30, 2009, 2:29 pm

I think I’m the minority on this one! I’m a definite dabbler. I work in communications which is great, because all my projects are short-term and fast-paced, and then I move onto the next thing. Fixating isn’t my thing… but sometimes I wish I could, so I could be more focused on things like fitness goals.

  • BOBBI McCORMICK March 30, 2009, 2:30 pm

I dabble for sure! I love the yummy lunch combo:)

  • elise March 30, 2009, 2:49 pm

im a little bit of both…i get in ruts like NO other, but at the same time, i love trying new things. but when i find something i like, its hard to pry it from my hands!!!!!!

  • Niki March 30, 2009, 2:50 pm

I fixate!! But it usually ends up being short lived. So maybe I’m contradicting myself, who knows?!?!

  • RunToFinish March 30, 2009, 3:39 pm

I like repitition and I like structure…so I probably fixate I just never thought of it that way!

  • livelovelaugheatlearn March 30, 2009, 3:47 pm

I try to fixste, but my mind ends up wandering because I’ve heard or seen it before!

  • Sarah W. March 30, 2009, 4:03 pm

    i fixate too!

  • Meredith (Pursuing Balance) March 30, 2009, 4:07 pm

Sometimes I fixate on books. Like if I read a book by a new author and I really like it, suddenly I HAVE to read all of the books by that author ASAP!

  • tabbyliciousness March 30, 2009, 4:51 pm

I fixate too- our as my dad calls it obsess. My current obsession is Twilight as well, but in the past it has been other books or movies, actors, singers, a particular song, sometimes even animals- one time I was obsessed with getting a rabbit but my parents said I could not bring it home over vacations and summer breaks.

  • Erin March 30, 2009, 6:02 pm

I totally don’t fixate, but the bf does and it drives me nuts!

  • Lauren March 30, 2009, 6:07 pm

My husband said the same thing about me the other day. Only he used the word “obsessed.” He said I take one thing to the extreme (like I started running and now I’m doing a marathon, I started to casually blog and turned it into an everyday part time job, I make every meal a ‘dining’ experience) It really got me thinking about myself and if it was a bad thing. I realized that it’s not a bad thing, I am just a passionate person and very passionate about the things I enjoy in life.

I think your “fixating” is just another way of saying you enjoy “savoring” the things in life that make you happy. Absolutely nothing is wrong with putting your whole heart and mind into the things that bring you joy!

  • iowagirleats March 30, 2009, 6:15 pm

Ugh I tooootally fixate on TONS of stuff. When I got the Mama Mia soundtrack, I listened to it on repeat for like a month – pretty lame, I know 🙂 I also get fixated on recipes and tend to “cook them to death”…what can you do?!

  • Anonymous March 30, 2009, 7:53 pm

I definitely fixate! I tend to like alot of things at once, but there is always something I single out and become obsessed with. Right now, it’s “The Office” I can’t stop watching it, reading about it, talking about it and learning about it’s stars. I even ran to Walmart late last night to buy the Office DVD game!

  • meegie lee April 1, 2009, 11:32 am

This is so funny that I found this post today–my husband is actually on to me for fixating on Twilight. We’re newlyweds and this is the first time this behavior has come up–but I do it all the time, especially with books (Outlander by Diana Galbadon was my longest :). You have a great blog by the way!
