Waffle Newbie

in All Posts

I woke up veryyyy excited to try out one of my wedding presents — a waffle maker!  Can you guess who gave me a waffle maker?…. Yup, Meghann! Who, ironically, had waffles for breakfast this morning. 🙂

However, I am a bit of a waffle newbie.  In fact, I don’t believe I’ve ever made my own waffles!  This morning, I used my Hodgson’s Mills Insta Bake Mix (which is what I make pancakes with) and followed the instructions on the back for waffle mix.

I wasn’t sure how much mix to add to the waffle maker…

Whoops — guess that was TOO much waffle mix!

I also wasn’t sure whether I could eat 1 waffle or 2.  They seemed quick thick (must have been all that extra batter)… but they were so golden and sweet-smelling!

This maker created perfectly formed honeycombs… mmm crunchy!

On the side, some maple syrup for dipping….

And sliced melon…

I only ended up eating one of the waffles, but Maggie and James got the rest!  Spoiled little doggies.

Plans, Plans

Plans for today include: running, cleaning the house, (its a disaster) and buying new running shoes!! As I mentioned last month, I have been wearing the same pair of sneakers since July 2007!  I did buy a new pair in October but they only irritated my knee problems, and we financially could not afford two new sneakers right before the wedding.

So, YAY for new kicks!  I need them.

What are your plans for the day?

My plans for today are to go to the horse sales to watch a rare horse sell, then a new friend is bringing her pup over to play with mine! Oh, and I am trying to stay warm. It’s 20 degrees here in Kentucky… MUCH warmer than the past two days, but still cold for a native Texan!

Plans for today… Workout, clean house, do laundry =) Go to a 50th Bday party tonight!

I definitely recommend going to a running store and having them pick a shoe for you. Makes a huge difference!

MMM, waffles. i love them w/ banana & peanut butter . . . although i usually cheat and buy the whole foods toaster version!

i plan to seriously hibernate and catch up on grey's anatomy and desparate housewives (fine, and some cleaning, laundry, and a workout too 🙂 )

Yay for new running shoes! And you could definitely use them since you’ve been using those for over a year and a half…yikes!

Plans for today include a 9 mile run (done!), running a couple errands (including the grocery), and hitting up the running expo for the Houston marathon. Should be a busy, but fun, day! Happy Saturday!

    Yay for new running shoes!

After seeing your breakfast pics and Meghann’s, all I’m thinking about is waffles! 🙂

Random question: Does “the huz” know of any supplements dealing with heart health? I just got some test results back and had really high C-reactive protein number. Just thought I’d ask!

  • Betsy in Pgh January 17, 2009, 11:39 am

I got a waffle maker for xmas last year and did the exact same thing… big ole mess. I love to make homemade pumpkin & gingerbread waffles. Seasonally, of course. 🙂

Those waffles look great! Now I am thinking I need to pull out the waffle maker I got for my wedding 2years ago that I’ve never used. Yum!

Plans? Hang out with the husband, work a little, date with the husband later tonight!

Yumm those waffles look soo good! James and I got a waffle maker for Christmas so we have been experimenting with it too! Last time we used a whole wheat oatmeal waffle recipe.

    http://redheadyellowdog.wordpress.com/2009/01/12/making-a-deal/

We also tried putting cake batter in the waffle maker….it worked!

plans for today? I think we’re going to head to the farmers market in a bit and maybe renting a movie later. we’re pretty crazy. watch out.

  • Leada January 17, 2009, 12:53 pm

I’m always a little too enthusiastic with the waffle batter too, don’t worry!

My plan for today is to figure out wordpress (I wasn’t having too much success with blogspot) and then go to the library and Whole Foods via bike! I’ve never biked in the city before, but hopefully I’ll do okay!

  • Meghann January 17, 2009, 1:13 pm

Yay! I’m glad you enjoyed the waffle maker! And its a fine art to figure out how much batter actually goes into the waffle iron.

That’s funny that you’ve never made your own waffle, I grew up on waffles in my house, we rarely had pancakes. You sould see my Dad’s waffle iron, its super duty state of the art version that you see at buffets. it’s the best thing ever.

  • HangryPants January 17, 2009, 1:16 pm

Homemade waffles are the best. I am sure your skills will improve. I always made them in the college cafeteria and had no cooking skills, so it’s easy! Havea great day.

What other exciting things did you get for your wedding?

  • Beadie January 17, 2009, 3:00 pm

    Those waffles look killer!

    Hooooray for new running shoes!!

I went to yoga this morning, then we ran errands and now we are about to work out!

  • Mica January 17, 2009, 3:05 pm

What an awesome present! It’s funny that you’re trying out new gadgets today. I just got a rice cooker and was thinking about taking it for a whirl this afternoon!

  • Kristin January 17, 2009, 4:24 pm

So jealous, I want one so bad!!
Unfortunately I’m not getting married anytime soon and the boyfriend told me he wanted a deep fryer more than a waffle maker (read: we’re not getting any new kitchen appliances!) hehe

Have fun with your new gifts!

Love the waffles…I always put in way too much batter too!

  • Mrs. LC January 17, 2009, 6:06 pm

aw, yay SO glad you’re getting new sneakers, finally! What kind are you getting? I know different shoes are for different people, but I recently got a pair of Asics and love them – I’ve rarely had knee pain since then!

  • Meredith January 17, 2009, 7:40 pm

The picture of your waffle maker in use brought back memories for me! When my sister (Hilary from Red Head Yellow Dog) and I were kids, our mom’s speciality was “oozing waffles”, so called because she always put too much batter into the waffle maker so they would ooze out 🙂 Messy, but delicious!

  • Sarah W. January 19, 2009, 8:33 am
