Oatmeal and Metatarsalgia

in All Posts

Morning!

Well, my new sneakers are going back to the store TONIGHT.  I’m 99% sure the pain is my foot is Metatarsalgia.  That’s a fancy medical term for "the bottom of my foot is bruised due to lack of padding in my new running shoes."

Acccording to MayoClinic.com, Metatarsalgia is caused during the push-off phase of running, during which your body weight is transferred to your toes and metatarsals.   Excess pressure on the metatarsals leads to inflammation and pain along the ball of your foot; and it feels just like a bruise.  Although there are multiple causes, shoes with a narrow toe box or a lack support and padding also can contribute to metatarsal problems.

Did you know each foot strikes the ground 800 times for each mile you run?  Whooooooooooooa!

Luckily, Metatarsalgia is not a serious condition.  I just need to get better shoes and take a few days off from running.

On to breakfast….

I went a little overboard on the oatmeal toppings!

My oatmeal contained:

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 sliced banana
  • Toppings:  Grape Nuts, blueberries, strawberries, and unsweetened coconut

I swear there is actually oatmeal underneath all those toppings! 🙂

Time for work! Have a great day!

To my friends in the Northeast and Northwest…. STAY WARM, be safe, and watch out for that ice!

Oh, here’s my official race photo from Saturday 5.2K.  Someone looks slightly pissed they were forced to run an extra 0.2k! 🙂

You have the worst luck with new shoes!! I hope you get some better ones tonight. (And your toppings & oatmeal looked delicious!!)

You look great in your race photos. I have had that same pain on the bottom of my foot. I switched shoes and have never had the pain since.

  • VeggieGirl January 28, 2009, 6:01 am

Hang in there with the foot pain!!

Oh yes, TONS of snow out here – I’m trying to stay warm, haha.

    Happy Wednesday!!

I hope you don’t have any trouble taking those terrible sneakers back…thats crazy to think that your foot hits the ground 800 times per a mile.. I guess that means your entitled to a lot of foot massages!

  • Red Head, Yellow Dog January 28, 2009, 6:06 am

too many toppings on oatmeal?? there’s no such thing…

I bet people could come up with some pretty elaborate oatmeal toppings!

  • Mica January 28, 2009, 6:08 am

Sorry about your foot. I guess those shoes really are bad news!

  • Ashley January 28, 2009, 6:29 am

I have had similar luck with Asics though I still wear them. 🙂 I highly recommend Nike’s for padding..I had the Vomeros I think..white with hot pink swoops and they were amazing. They didn’t last as slong as my aasics due to cushion but were great!

Hi Caitlin- I have a question for you regarding a great multi-vitamin for women. Do you have any recommendations?

Good luck with the returns/shoe shopping :o)

Interesting info about feet and running. I wonder if that’s why my right foot sometimes falls asleep near the end of a run? Hmm…

    Love that pic!! 🙂

  • JustJen January 28, 2009, 7:20 am

I hope you can return your shoes and your foot heals quickly!

  • Jess January 28, 2009, 7:22 am

  • K January 28, 2009, 8:00 am

  • Holly January 28, 2009, 8:00 am

    Great photo!

I’ve found that the cooshiest shoes are NIKE. I like my Brooks too, but my Nike’s are so soft!!

  • fitforfree January 28, 2009, 8:03 am

I love topping-heavy oatmeal 🙂 looks so good!

Good luck with the shoes . . .

  • greendogwine January 28, 2009, 8:03 am

Sorry about the shoes – but at least you are taking them back now!

Those oats look pretty damn tasty – great combo!

LOL – I don’t think you look pissed – you look “FOCUSED”

  • Victoria January 28, 2009, 8:17 am

Glad it doesn’t seem too serious. Good luck getting new shoes!

  • Heather McD (Heather Eats Almond Butter) January 28, 2009, 8:17 am

Are you sure there was oatmeal under there? 🙂

Sorry about the Metatarsalgia. I hope some different shoes solve the problem.

    Have a good Wednesday Caitlin!

  • lilveggiepatch January 28, 2009, 8:47 am

Poor foot! Would insoles help? Hope you get some nice comfy new ones.

Lots of snow here, but mostly ice… for some reason they don’t think it’s necessary to plow (or scrape?) that way, and it is SO FREAKING DANGEROUS.

  • HangryPants January 28, 2009, 9:02 am

What a great running shot! I’ve never seen a picture of myself running!

I hope everything works out with the sneakers and your foot!

Oh, and I think it is keen-wa. 😀

  • Bridget January 28, 2009, 9:16 am

Man I haven’t had grapenuts in YEARS!! I think its about time to bring ’em back into my life 🙂

    Bummer about your foot!!!

  • Bridget January 28, 2009, 9:19 am

Funny…I just read down a few posts and your 5 year dating anniversary was 1 day after mine!!! So random …Yay for 5 years 🙂

  • Kelly's Belly January 28, 2009, 9:33 am

To my friend in the southeast,

Though not as warm as usual, please enjoy every ounce of warmth you have down there.

    Sincerely,

    Your friend in the northeast!

p.s. Your oatmeal looks delicious!! I had a different sort of pain after the first run in new shoes. It wasn’t bruising. Rather my feet were just numb. The laces weren’t tied to tight so perhaps the shape of the shoe didn’t work for me. Any thoughts??

  • Beadie @ What I Ate Yesterday January 28, 2009, 10:12 am

I hope your foot is feeling better soon. Good luck finding the right pair of shoes. Shoes are such a tricky topic for runners!

  • Olga January 28, 2009, 10:25 am

thanks for your safety wishes =]

school’s out for today so I’m inside! Every time I see GrapeNuts on your blog, I want some! Luckily, I bought two boxes on sale =]

    Sorry about your foot!

  • Courtney January 28, 2009, 10:29 am

    Hi Caitlin,

I am a reader (and first time commenter) from San Francisco. Great blog- I am training for a half marathon as well and your daily training updates are extremely motivating!

Have you tried Superfeet? I suffer from ITBS and my doctor recommended the insoles. They have been incredibly helpful in reducing the stress on my knee and I would imagine they would help with your Metatarsalgia.

    Good luck!

    Courtney

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point January 28, 2009, 10:34 am

courtney – thanks for the recommendation!!! i will check this out. i think ive seen them at the shoe store im going to later.

  • Lindsay January 28, 2009, 11:11 am

OMG! That’s me! I have that too!! it happened while I was training for my marathon last fall. I just couldn’t take the pain any longer and went to an orthopedic. Had an MRI done to show the “contusion” on the bottom of my foot. They got inserts which turned out not to be helpful at all (the bump to support my arch and relieve stress on my pad just felt like a bump and very uncomfortable).

So I now have new running shoes and the red bottom of the Nike Moto’s are more squishy which mean that it feels better but I’ve been told that it won’t give me any more padding.

I just have incredibly narrow, long, skinny, bony feet. If this happens again for my Spring marathon training, I’m going to give up on marathons all together and just stick with halves. *sigh*

Sorry about your foot – that sounds terribly painful. Don’t know if its helpful, but I swear by Saucony shoes.
