forest run

in All Posts
at 7:40 am, i ran my 10k. it was the 3rd annual forest run and it’s held in the beautiful moss park, located in southeastern orlando.

apparently there were massive storms last night because it was SUPER muddy! it made running so much more fun as i splashed through the puddles. i tried to avoid them until the last two miles, and then i gave up! 🙂 these used to be white and pink:

the run went really well! it was a fun and challenging course, almost 90% shaded, and there is some beautiful scenery. i felt pretty strong (well, as strong as i could feel with 5 hours of sleep and after drinking two beers last night) and i timed well overall:

  • Mile 1: 8:40
  • Mile 3: 27:30
  • Mile 5: 48:00
  • Finish: Approx 1 hr 1 minutes…. same as my last 10k!
one of my race tricks is to pick out someone within the first mile that i think can maintain a strong pace, and then i follow them. this race, it was a girl in purple shorts. she was so fast and it helped push me. we stopped at a water station and introduced ourselves around mile 4. 🙂 i lost her around mile 5 (she was so fast!) when i stopped to walk through another water station. in total, i probably walked 3 minutes.

around mile 4, i started to feel sick. i think it was the combination of gatorade (gross… they handed them out at water stations), the handful of nuts i ate like 15 minutes before start, and the two beers last night. well, i crossed the finish line and this lovely volunteer shouted “GREAT JOB!” and handed me a water. i promptly turned around and yakked in a trash can! i felt so bad for the volunteer! before the run i fueled with a PB & banana sandwich, which really keep me satisfied (until i yakked, of course).

and when i got home, i had a protein shake with whey protein powder, yogurt, milk, a banana, and some blueberries. i’m still hungry!

i stuck around for the awards ceremony for some reason (i never do) and i actually placed 2nd in my age/sex division! yay! my first little trophy.

All in all, it was a great race and i’ll definitely do it again next year. 🙂 i’m tired and need to stretch, but i think we’re going to head to seaworld with our out-of-town guest. i love that place!

really, if any of you are interested in learning to run, getting faster, or are just sick of your exercise routine, try a race! it’s a fun experience!

have a nice day everyone…. enjoy your saturday 🙂

Hey Caitlin, I know you ran this a few years ago but I’m considering doing it this year – was it very hilly? I’m not used to trail or forest running – just pavement! Any thoughts on how difficult the switch would be?
